Calle 13... perfect example: Nothing to say but their songs are sooooo catchy. Same with merengue and lyrics like "palo con ella, toma, toma" Or la de la tanguita roja... major

Now, MJ & Ghostman, all those artists you mentioned are so well-respected and deep. So would you say that most kids ACTUALLY pay attention to what is being said or do they just take what is being fed to them. I guess now with internet access the underground is different, but the industry still has the upper hand in what reaches the masses or not. But are kids more educated now in terms of what and who they listen to? 'Cause let me tell you, Gwen is mighty catchy. whoo hoo yee hoo

But I also find that lately, not just hip hop, but even mainstream pop artists seem to be a little deeper than before... Do you agree? Even some reggaeton is more than fluff (I don't know much about it, but I've heard a couple of Tego and Don Omar songs and they're not exactly Gwen).

Are you kidding me??  Not THIS generation!  These kids have their heads so far up their ass with 50 Cent, The Game, Eminem, yada yada yada they have NO clue what's going on.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE The Game but perfect example.........when I listen to him, I always obviously listen to the beat and I love the lyrics, my brother on the other hand, just looks at his tattoos, his clothes and right away claims that he's "hood" and that's he's been listening to hip hop ALL 11 YEARS of his retarded life!!! 

It's all about image with kids nowadays.  I played my stuff to my brother and he said, "I'm OLD!!!"    On top of that, I had to knock this kid into reality and say, "You live in Mississauga!  You grew up in Mississauga!  You're not HOOD!!!"  Ugh!  I wanna strangle that kid!  Then he claims to be Dre's #1 fan talking about Compton this, Compton that.  I ask him about NWA and he gives me this face

calle 13 are like the redman or emenim of reggaeton...when u hear theyre lyrics you are like WTF did they say???lol the new album aint bad....it took me a while to get used to their style but yeah theyre in my good books

What exactly makes a "good" lyric?

Calle 13 lyrics are not the deepest or insighful of lyrics but they are pretty creative, clever and funny so in my oppinion they are "good". Other people dont like them because they find them offensive and crass.. so who is to say they are good or not good?

I agree with you, and that is why I mentioned that it all depends on who you ask right.... I might find something offencive or crap, but you enjoy it, so it all depends on personal preferences......

A lot of people think like you and that is why Calle 13 is so popular....

club anthems....such as hiphop tracks reggaeton tracks r&b tracks with  good beats are ment for parties and having a good time ...like honestly your expecting some dj to put a track of immortal tec at a club??lol not going to happen..

theres music for every moment....trust me a die hard fan like myself knows this;p

theres plenty of reggaeton and latin hiphop tracks that aint all about parties or clubs...you people just dont know know about it

As for lyrics, hell yah! Thats what makes the song, thats what makes it powerful and even life changing sometimes.  Lyrics is what makes a song. Obviously you need to have a wicked beat, but if all you have a is a good beat and useless lyrics, what you end up with some of what is currently mainstrem hip hop, and the ever popular reggaetoni.
