Ahem, Yesi & Princesa, lets stay on topic here please. Thank you.
Now,
in my opinion, a good lyric would consist of the following: Creativity, meaning, versatility and will withstand time.

I think it all depends on who you ask.... As for me if I don't like the lyrics i won't listen to it.... I mean all that Calle 13 shiat,..... Sorry I know some of you like their music, but to me the lyrics are stupid and at times offensive to people..... I hate their music and it has nothing to do with them or their rythim is mainly with the lyrics....
But if you ask my fiance if likes it he will say off course , he loves the beat, than you ask him what the song is about it and he has no idea hahahahaha.....
For me Lyrics all the way, unfortunatelly not for everyone so you see the masses dancing to "Es un merengue sin letra" hahahaha or Calle 13 crap...
My two cents
Calle 13... perfect example: Nothing to say but their songs are sooooo catchy. Same with merengue and lyrics like "palo con ella, toma, toma" Or la de la tanguita roja... major
Now, MJ & Ghostman, all those artists you mentioned are so well-respected and deep. So would you say that most kids ACTUALLY pay attention to what is being said or do they just take what is being fed to them. I guess now with internet access the underground is different, but the industry still has the upper hand in what reaches the masses or not. But are kids more educated now in terms of what and who they listen to? 'Cause let me tell you, Gwen is mighty catchy. whoo hoo yee hoo
But I also find that lately, not just hip hop, but even mainstream pop artists seem to be a little deeper than before... Do you agree? Even some reggaeton is more than fluff (I don't know much about it, but I've heard a couple of Tego and Don Omar songs and they're not exactly Gwen).

Calle 13 lyrics are not the deepest or insighful of lyrics but they are pretty creative, clever and funny so in my oppinion they are "good". Other people dont like them because they find them offensive and crass.. so who is to say they are good or not good?

This brings up a good point:
What exactly makes a "good" lyric?
Calle 13 lyrics are not the deepest or insighful of lyrics but they are pretty creative, clever and funny so in my oppinion they are "good". Other people dont like them because they find them offensive and crass.. so who is to say they are good or not good?
I agree with you, and that is why I mentioned that it all depends on who you ask right.... I might find something offencive or crap, but you enjoy it, so it all depends on personal preferences......
A lot of people think like you and that is why Calle 13 is so popular....
I agree with u. I was just saying more as a general question not disagreeing with you.

anyways, back to seriousness... I believe what he was refering to when he said lyrics are no longer important is to make a "hit". To be honest pop music has never really been totally about the lyrics (look up the lyrics to My Sharona or Loui Loui) but its true that a song can be a hit in the clubs or in the radio with just a good beat and a catchy hook. this is true of ALL popular music not just hip hop. (Nelly Furtado's lyrics suck too, its not just Nelly the rapper) However, there are still a lot of people making music who are dedicated lyricist, its just that that kind of music doesnt make it on Flow. Common, Lupe Fiasco, KRS ONE, Murs, Cormega, Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Mos Def, Skillz and a whole bunch of others are out there still doing it.

thank jebus! I thought this was about that homobean movie with Drew Barrymore and the british dude.
As for lyrics, hell yah! Thats what makes the song, thats what makes it powerful and even life changing sometimes. Lyrics is what makes a song. Obviously you need to have a wicked beat, but if all you have a is a good beat and useless lyrics, what you end up with some of what is currently mainstrem hip hop, and the ever popular reggaetoni.
This question is PERFECT for me, El Pibe, Phanta and Chale!!!!
Hallelujah Hollaback!!!!
Ummm....so yeah! Lyrics are VERY important to me which is why I prefer ol' skool! Sometimes they were goofy and most of the time, there were actually MESSAGES (Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC, Pharcyde, and the "underground" Black Eyed Peas) Nowadays, it's just money, cars, beating up people, girls and pretty much nothing else!!
GARBAGE!!!!

Have you guys ever watched The (White) Rapper Show? One of the judges said something that I found very interesting. He said that "being a lyricist just doesn't matter that much anymore." Now, I don't follow hip hop or rap or reggaeton, but I'm wondering, do people pay attention to the lyrics anymore? Is this judge right? Is a catchy beat enough to make a song successful?
'Cause lyrics, to me, are like the oral history that we pass on from generation to generation. It's easier to remember a song than a lesson in history. A lot of rap and hip hop songs and even regggaeton were and still are subversive and have very important messages that young people won't get any other way. But for the music industry that doesn't really matter. What matter is to find someone that appeals to the masses, who looks good and sounds good, even if they're not saying sh-it. What do you guys think?
