Did the GOVERNMENT impregnate them? No! (Ok, maybe through OHIP, but that’s stretch) Then the GOVERNMENT shouldn’t be liable
This couple went into the procedure KNOWING that they could have between zero and 6 (or whatever amount of eggs got fertilized) children.... if they didn’t like the odds... tough!
As for Genie’s example.... it’s a good point. The difference is that the government doesn’t pay for teenaged girls or single moms that have children. The government pays for teenaged girls or single moms that DON’T HAVE ENOUGH INCOME to make ends meet (or anyone that can't make ends meet, for that matter) I think the same welfare rules should apply to couples that try Invitro and end up having more births than they hoped for
Government shouldn’t hand you money JUST because you had more children than you expected!!! I had one child that I wasn’t planning on. Should the government hand MEEEEE a monthly cheque, just ‘cause I didn’t plan it?!!!
Bottom line... if they have enough money to support the kids, well then, see ya! And if they DON’T have enough money to support such a family, then and ONLY then, they should get subsidized by the government, just like every other Canadian that is in the same situation does, through welfare

no offence but what do you know? were you a woman in a past life? are you a doctor? porque even if all your equiptment is running well in there (the womb) it's hard to get pregnant naturally as well.
trust me i know a lot about it because if i didn't i wouldn't say anything.......and I'm talking about the invitro procedure.....invitro has been around for a long time and things like this have been worked out so we wont run into problems like this one........why do u think is such a big news?

I don't know, but you can tell me what google says.
haha......i don't need google. and if i did need something like that i would use wikipeia.

There is nothing that would make me believe that anyone that chooses to have kids, should get any money from tax payer $$.
If your make that decision, then be resposible for it.
We know make this "one of a kind" exception & it will get out of hands. Then we have another case like this & again the gov't should help. No way, don't agree.

I don't want or think that ppl. that can live a good life should get money from gov't, wat I think is that things should be fair & if these couples are paying so much to get pregnant, then they should assume their own responsibility of supporting them without having to ask for help.
My brother chose to have kids, he lives up to that resposibility, no one helps him, therefore I see no excuse for anyone.
That's what i said! But i agree with you.

from what i know is not like just anyone tries Invitro the people that actually try this procedure are hard working people, so u have to look at it this way, they are also paying taxes and in the long run all these kids will be doing the same plus more......so they will pay back+

So then when i have a baby & being a tax payer I should get money/support for my children.
My brother doesn't even get baby bonuses for his kids, cus apparently he makes more then the cut for the bonuses are. BULLSh_t. If these couples get money so should everyone else that has kids. They all spend the same amount of money raising them.

Yeah and if the mother is successful she gets a year off to spend with them! Maternatiy leave! But why should we have to give her extra money because she got four kids instead of the one she wanted?? I mean i pay taxes and eventually my kids will too so let me go try this and if i have more then one kid its ok cuz i paid taxes so now its my turn to feed off it all?? doesnt make sense?

See, i don't understand. If you're well off, capable of living a very good life, providing to your children and so on, why would you want the Gov. involved? I'd want them to leave me the hell alone.

I agree Rich/Poor/Middle Class it is still expensive to raise a kid.
@ Guada - I would have no problems either in getting a child from the childrens aid society.
plus something else i forgot to mention, they actually make u sign a paper incase something like this happens, I forgot what is it that they do but u can't have more than 1 or 2 kids. I'll get back with more info about this when i remember.

A little off topic here, but would you guys adopt from a place like the Childrens aid society where it is free, but you don't know what you get in terms or age, race, gender?
Discuss
I would have no problem. It's not like i'm going to get a cat that i need it to look a certain way. If someone needs me to take care off, i'll do it.

hmm.. interesting. I do not think that the government aka taxpayers are responsible for the multiple births of couples who have used invitro. It was a choice and a risk these couple make. Come on, it's not the first multiple birth EVER... these ppl know what could possibly happen. NOW, what I do think the government should look at reforming is maybe the costs of these procedures. Why does it cost so much? Maybe if the cost of the procedure wasn't so high, couples wouldn't have to do it all in "one shot".
Maybe it's the equiptment they use? the procedures, keeping it under proper hygenic conditions. I don't know. But i don't think it's as easy as sticking a tampon up there and pop, there you go.

I agree. There is a girl who works with me. She is 29 and has been married since she was 20. Her husband and her have been trying to have a baby for years and have tried Invitro 3 times. It's actually a bit more than $10g's. She says it's about $14,000.00 The chances of having multiple births are there, but not high. In her case it has not been effective. She has now given up on Invitro because of the expense and is looking to adopt. That is another expensive approach, but she is doing it through the Childrens aid society which is a free process, but you don't get to choose what you get. She could get a baby or a 12 year old, but at this point will take anything.
I also agree with Guada though. You should put careful thought in everything you do, and if multiple births are a possibility you have to be sure you are ready for the responsability.
I never said that people going through treatment are always successful, i know it isn't easy because i also know people who have been heartbroken because it didn't work. But i am a tad bothered at the fact that those who succeed in having a family have the nerve to ask for more.

why Gov should pay ??? If they want kids they should pay is not Tax Payers responsability to get'em pregnant, if they really want kids they should cover all the expenses from their pockets.
Same rationale would apply to the cost of adopting ???
Now Tax payers have to fund Non-fertile couples...No way Jose
very well put!!! but let me get on the other side then why do we pay for unwed teenage mothers and women on welfare??
I mean i totally agree with you! but im just being a pain to see the other side. (mind you i know that one has nada to do with the other but i mean tax money wise)
@ God: True True. I agree
@Genie: I don't think we should pay/help younge mother/women or welfare. If they chose to have the kid then the should think on how to support them selfs & the baby. As to wlefare, well too much abuse, so they should cut if off.

So i'm sure you guys heard about the toronto couple that recently welcomed sextuplets.
Now, some people undergoing fertility treatment wants the Gov. to cover the cost (or partial) of the multiple births (providing support and so on) since it's economically straining when caring for more than one child on the same age.
(i think i heard right)
Either way, the couple going through the treatment have the multiple eggs implanted to increase the chances of implant. And more often than not, a few eggs get fertilized and stick on. Which makes sense, since it cost 10G's to have it done per session. So why not do more in one shot right?
So my question is, why don't they want to face the responsibilty after? I think it's silly to ask for the Gov. to support your multiple births. But this is just my opinion.

I agree with you! I mean its a treatment that cost alot of Money and if you can afford it then you should be aware of what can happen and how many babies you might end up with! Its a personal choice that you make so it should be your responsibility no?
