@Lab: not that i'm condoning the use of the word, but i see it like the word 'queer'. The homosexual community turned it around and embraced it to be their own word.
i think everyone is a little hyper sensitive these days anyway (me included).
So, I forwarded the link (and the question on this thread – by mistake) to a couple of black co-workers. Here is what one of them had to say:
“These are my thoughts:
I know the black community is embracing this word "Nigga" but what they keep forgotten is that this word is historically tied to the putting black people down. I think it's disrespectful to our ancestors, our parents and ourselves using this word. Nigga was one of the most damaging tools used by the Europeans to force mental slavery on black people. Now we are calling each other Niggas - we look at each other the way the rest of the world views us. Our black people suffered way too long and are still suffering today. I find the word "nigga" to be very degrading. I think as a people we should stop using this word completely. Remember, this word was originally created by racist whites to express hate for black people and to convince whites of their superiority. We need to respect the past, present and future.”
