well Ernesto, te voy a comentar....

Hello

Yes in NYC I use enlgish at work only. On the streets I 90% can use spanish.

I believe not even the gringos realize how much spanish is spoken in NYC since

hispanic people usually speak them in English.

About the subway it depends of the train number I usually took train 1 & 9 and after

125th street you start seeing a lot of "primos" as we said here in and out.

I use to live in 137th street this section is mostly D. R. (Dominican Republic)

Mexicans are getting bigger here but still PuertoRico and Domincana is

the dominant hispanic group.

There is a lot of parades around the year. There is also flee markets where

you see people from Peru selling knitting cloth this is very good business here

for fall and winter.

I know two big hispanic centers around Roosvelt in Queens, Union City in new jersey

they are kind of micro latin-american cities and good places to eat.

One question how bad is winter in Canda in NYC the worse winter months are

usually January and February the temperature can get -20 degrees but only

for a day or two usually stay between -10 and -5 we also get 1 or 2 blizzards

with about 1 foot of snow. I know Canadian winter can be harsh but is it that

hard?

Canadian winter are harsh especially in January and February where we often have severals consecutives days really cold weather. It happens at times we get between -10 and -20 degrees without considering the wind factor which makes it worse when it happens. But in general things get slightly cold from the end of November until the end of march, just before spring comes back. But winter is fun too because you can do many outside activities and of course, you would to buy a lot of winter stuff to get use to the Canadian winter only 5-6 hours away by car from the big apple and the worse thing to do is to lock yourself at home during winter.

As an example,2 years ago, my aunt who's living in Florida came in Montreal visiting us in december and January and she loved it so much that she may back for this year Christmas holidays again.

This thread got me in the mood for tacos. Deja vu.

However in NYC you can see a lot of people from all over the world.

Most of the people come to work here they live outside so when it comes

to work everyone is mixed. However when it comes to the neighborhood

it is interesting you can see some "invisible" borders for instance you

may have a railroad or a highway in one side live one community and in the

other lives another. Even so in the subway that cross the whole city when

you take it in downtown you see say mostly chinise people  in midtown you see mostly white

people when you get to uptown you already cross all continents in only one subway.

Well I was visiting NYC (Manhattan) two weeks ago, and I found the same multiculturalist than in Toronto.
Probably you will find more Asian immigrants and less Hispanic. I didn't have to speak English in Manhattan, everybody was talking to me in Spanish even Chinese sellers in Canal street .

As in NYC in Toronto you will feel that are you traveling around the world when you are taking the subway, but the big difference is that you will have less time to enjoy it, Toronto's subway doesn't run 24 hours as some lines from NYC's subway do.

I think you will find Toronto quieter, cleaner and safer ( I didn't have any problems in NYC, even thought I stayed in a hostel in the Spanish Harlem, which looks to me very friendly and represent a lot of the Hispanic identity) but media and some people say a lot of horrendous stories about Hispanics in NYC.

Perhaps my perspective as a visitor in New York is too light to say if it is similar to Toronto, but I think if you are looking for better standards of life, probably you will find less people in poverty here and a stronger social support system, a fairer society in certain way.

and what no specific reference about latinos in your description lol!??

everytime i goto NY ..the city seems like its slowly getting dominated by hispanics...

mexicans out there especially....they seem to be the new latino minority coming up

im sure u been to queens the bronx lower manhattan washignton heights bushwick brooklyn...u can speak spanish everywhere...

walking around in some parts of queens i literally didnt really see not one white person...

i think toronto is much more diverse then NY!

what shocked me when i was there was going into any mickee dees burger king bodegas..corner stores etc...hahahaha mostly all the employees were latino...

tell me where in canada can u order a big mack in spanish!!!lol.....

Welcome in Canada, and I hope things goes as you've planned it to go in Toronto where the standard of living is better than NYC but Toronto is still the most expensive city in Canada though. Montreal is not expensive at all for a multicultural city of 2 million people. For example, when you go out clubbing you pay at the top 10$ and the same for parking. But in the majority of places you pay less between 3$ and 8$. and I can give so many other example. In T.O. many club asked 15$ and about the same for parking.

By the way it is the city in Canada donde hay el mas numerosos de latinos after Toronto. But in Montreal (Provincia de Québec) could be easily compare to European cities because the main language is French but english is the second language.

Montreal es completamente differente del resto de Canada sobre la manera de vivir donde vida social and business se mescla muy bien and the way house and building are so different. People are not 'snob'.  You could come and see by yourself by visiting in a Weekend and It is only a 5 hour-drive from NYC to Montreal. Normally when I go to NYC, It takes me less time to reach NYC (5 hours) than when I go to Toronto (6 hours).

Bienvenido, Bienvenue, Welcome!

There is absolutely no way you can compare two cities like NYC and Toronto!!  I'm too tired to get into it!

I absolutely love NYC because it's fun and it just seems to never sleep, however, Toronto is clean, and "organized" dare I say.  I just find Toronto a healthier city with a healthier lifestyle!!!

LABS' friend is right though: "Toronto is what New York was supposed to be and never was".

I guess that's why I am exploring in the internet to see what I get.

What I believe is that canadians are in basic terms like american gringos

but slightly less ego-centric. although before coming to the states I had

one impression from the TVs and movies and now I realize I was somewhat wrong about this country.

May be the only thing about canada is that they don;t have so many movies that

made proclamations about their way of life. Meaing they may be more open

towards other cultures.

That sounds about right to me.

I haven't been to NYC myself, but I've heard that  while both cities are multicultural, in Toronto the different cultures are more integrated, as opposed to NYC where pretty much every culture has their own space in the city.

..but correct me if I'm wrong.

...and give me a toke if I'm sober.

At some point someone will have to put together some sort of FAQ for el Foro.

We use english in el foro because not all people with hispanic vibes 'round here do have the spanish it'd take to do otherwise, would you believe.

@ MM and other Spanish-disabled folks 'round...

Yes visiting for a weekend is a good idea. The point is that I got a Permanent Resident

visa and as fas as I know once I go in I have to stay there for a while until I get my Resident Card and I cannot just disappeare from my current job. Besides I am in NYC as H1B

so once I go to Canada I have to get an appointment in the US-Emabassy to get my

passport restamped and they take a week or so to do it. The closest I ever been there

is the Niagar Falls I went a couple of years ago an I crossed to the Canadian side.

I left with a good impression.

So why you say Toronto fortunely is not like a US city?
