You don't need a wireless connection.....you need to get out more!

and bro u r paying too much for sympatico, ask them for a contract for a year u will pay less for ur internet.

yeah, I think they offered me about 10-12 dollars off per month if I signed up for 2 or 3 years... but I'm one of those that is affraid of commitment! - Mind you had I signed up when offered, I would be half-way through the contract... oh well.
I'll likely look into it once I get a laptop and find a way of getting wireless internet access... no point to sign up before then, now.

Now a question about WIRELESS internet (I hope I ask it properly ):
If you have no internet connection at home - what service provides are out there that provide WIRELESS internet connections (do rogers and Bell have it)? In other words, let's prettend for a second I have no home phone and no rogers cable - how do I go about getting wireless internet access? and what will my laptop need in order to do that?
look at link above for answers
if u r not in the zone u r out of luck........but they also have satellite internet but $$$$
LGigolo wrote: The free "hot spots" I was referring to are the "legally free ones" For instance, I have heard that some coffee shops (some Starbucks?) and many colleges / hospitals - offer hot spots for people to connect to the net for free.
As for the other ones - I wouldn't mind learning either
Yes, if their hot spots are free and unsecured then you can connect with your wireless capable laptop.
I regularly use my laptop at Starbucks' hotspot and it is NOT free You will have to sign up for a session (when you try to open your internet browser you will auto be redirected tothe hotspot site) you can either pay by credit card, or charge it to you cell phone bill by choosing you provider (rogers, fido bell...)
u and others might find this of interest
1. What is Toronto Hydro Telecom announcing today? Toronto Hydro Telecom is announcing plans to provide a blanket of Wi Fi coverage in the downtown Toronto core, giving Toronto the largest ubiquitous Wi Fi coverage zone in Canada. Anyone who works, lives, studies or plays in the downtown core will have access to this new network. The new Wi Fi service is a complementary service to Toronto Hydro Telecom’s existing fibre optic business, which has been in operation since 1995.
6. What are your rates for this service? For the first six months, the service will be available free of charge to anyone in the ‘blanketed’ zone. After that time, four packages will be available, and rates will be competitive with Bell, Rogers and Telus.

I am currently looking to buy a laptop that I can network with my desktop and be able to carry around and access the net (not necesarily foro) from the so called "hot spots" around the city... A couple of questions for the techies out there:
I use Sympatico HS internet. What do I need/computer needs to have in order to network with my (1 year old) home PC?
What should the laptop have in order to access wireless internet on the "hot spots"? and how does one go about getting permission to access internet access?
Any other things I should be looking at on a laptop?
I have been looking/thinking of buying the following laptop (at Costco) - Does it sound like a good deal?

Although it's single channel, it's perfect for home recording and playing, because it has a half-power switch that would bring it down from 15W to 7W RMS clean, and it's all-tube Class A.
It uses 2 12AX7 on the preamp section, and 2 EL84 in the power section.
I know what you're going to say....."but it's a single channel amp! how do you expect to move from clean to distorted sound if you need to??"
Well, I was thinking on getting a Fuzz pedal, right now the Zvex FuzzFactory looks like a winner, but my only concern is that it doesn't have a synth option.
What do you guys think?
can you make orange juice with it????

GiGi, do you mind if I use this thread to ask THE PEOPLE something? I'm also looking for something. Do you guys know where I can buy pipianes? Pipianes are like Zucchinis, but they come from tropical countries. I've been craving that, so if you know, please let me know. Any help would be highly appreciated.

A wireless router in your home will allow you to connect your wireless capable laptop anywhere in your home where the wireless signal can reach. The wireless router depends on your existing Sympatico high speed service.
With your wireless laptop you can connect to an unsecured 'hot spot' for free. The key word is 'unsecured'. Some people don't set security on their wireless routers and that will allow you to connect for free.
And when you say 'hot spots', can you give me examples of what hot spots you want to connect to for free?

Your laptop needs to support wireless LAN. Most new laptops support this including the one you listed.
good battery life is recommended.
The laptop you listed is decent. what will you use the laptop for?
It is intended to be a back-up/secondary computer for home - with the ability to take it elsewhere from time to time. Mostly used for everyday stuff: web surfing, MINIMAL gaming (poker), Word, Excel, and probably kids' games. More like a second TV - when someone is using it for one show and someone else needs at the same time to watch another show - in this case, a computer needed at the same time for different purposes.
With a wireless router: will I be able to connect to the net on the "hot spots" for free? and how does one get to connect/sign on the the net?
