Even though this post started off as being one the more asinine ones I began to read some of the responses and realized that it does hit a collective nerve among us. I cannot speak for anyone else but myself and will do so...

I came to torontohispano because i was indeed looking for people who have a hispanic background but were not the types I kept meeting in latino clubs in toronto. It seems I kept encountering the stereotypical latino (you know the ones that whites make fun of). I could not understand why that when I 've visited chile, or argentina, or spain, or even miami that I could easily meet intelligent professional latino's who didn't fit the stereotypical image. They didn't go to latino clubs, dance salsa eat the same latino foods. The listened to rock, were interested in foreign cultures including foods and languages, etc. They were in fact very cosmopolitan.

(My theory is that a lot of latinos in Canada are from the rural areas and were not very cosmopolitan when they livd there. Similarly, a lot of Woodbridge Italians and Portuguese are from the rural areas (villages and islands) and have very little in common then the italians from Rome/Milan or Lisbon)

However many latinos here generally seem to be very protective if not insular. They see anything latino as the best and resist the dominate culture. Great for preserving your heritage ...terrible for meeting new (and different) people.

If I may borrow from popular culture the case of the recent Survivor premise. I was total aghast at the racial divisions but then I slowly began to realize something. The show was illustrating the fact that just because you were of the same race it doesn't mean you will get along with each other. I bring up this example because when we moved to Canada my parents made an effort to hook up with other chilenos. However they became aware that the only thing they had in common with a lot of them was that they were from chile.  They in fact became better friends with Canadians.

I tried hanging out in salsa clubs and even learned how to dance salsa because it was a way of meeting other latinos. When I go back to chile and hang out con mi primos no one dances salsa and they all listen to rock.

I still come to the foro because I encounter a lot of latinos who don't conform to the stereotypical notions of what it means to be latino. Something you, Sabornuevo, seem to want to change.

NOT ENTIRELY.....because if someone wants to do something they will regardless.....I'm just saying the parents could have helped....

Some people's lives just takes a different turn.....at the end of the day if you're both born in Ecuador and you speak it and he doesn't .....it doesn't make him any less Ecuadorian than you......

Well....go back to by post about growing up with other cultures....and parents not emphasizing the language thing at home.....so it's not so much their fault you know.....help them don't judge them and critisize them......

As far as Latinos thinking they are "too good" for Privilege's ghetto crowd.....well....the crowd LOOKS ghetto (even I see this from the pictures) .....but the bottom line is that every Saturday it's packed and SN has had steady nights......not everything or everywhere will appeal to everyone.....right?  And that's the point I was trying to make.....

Just like you (Danny) won't get caught in a Latin Rock club/pub kinda place....it's the same way someone who doesn't like a ghetto looking crowd....won't go to those places.....

he more cultures you know...the more open minded you become.....I eat Chinese food, watch Bollywood movies, Love Reggae, Pupusas are part of my TOP 3 fav food choices....etc etc......it doesn't make me better than anyone else.....it just allows me to be more open minded and understand PEOPLE more.....that's the only "Race" that counts anyway!

WOW, I definately agree with you 100%.  We are so lucky to live in a place like Canada where you have so many choices.

Music is only a percentage of being latino, not a whole. If that's all you base your roots on, you're no where near being a true hispanic.

First and Foremost SN you are not making any sense!! For someone who claims to be so latino you have a lot to learn!!!

Being latin is not only about our music!! its our history its our language our FOOD!! You are generalizing way tooo much!!

Oh and i know some CHINOS who dance salsa better with more rythm and moves then our REAL LATINOS!

Can you please tell me what kind of Latino I am ? ...I like Gustavo Cerati way more than Dadddy Yankee, la salsa la bailo apurado, I can't even tell the difference between bachata and merengue,  I haven't eaten empanadas since the last century.....but I lived 85% of my life in SudAm and it's still my favorite destination to travel....do I earn more points if I still care for the domestic futbol league?

Now I see that in your definition of "verdadero Latino" the clubs play a vital role.....I came back a few months ago from there....and it seems to me that  young people like to party more with techno and rok tropical and maybe reggaetton and salsa and other rhytms are play more in Viejotecas.....does it mean that they are   less latinos than you or me?

To me there are two types of "Latinos"  those who stereotype the others and those who don't.

Speaking about Lahtinos......where is Lahtina?

I'M PROBABLY NOT THE BESTEST PERSON TO REPLY TO THIS TOPIC, SINCE 24/7 CLUBBING IS NOT MY THING.....BUT I CAN STILL FORMULATE AN OPINION BASED ON MY FEW EXPERIENCES.....

In my opinion, english clubs are good but wack at the same time.

JUST LIKE ANY CLUB.....DIFFERENT TASTES FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE....

Before i started sabor nuevo i used to hit non latin nights to, but it was like i was being force feed music that i don't want to hear all night.

BY FORCED, YOU MEAN BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T PLAY SONGS YOU WANTED TO HEAR?....OR "FORCED" AS IN THERE WAS NOWHERE ELSE YOU COULD GO? ....BECAUSE FOR EXAMPLE WHEN I GO TO A LATIN CLUB, I'M "FORCED" TO LISTEN TO CRAPPY DJ'S, PLAY A CRAPPY SELECTION OF MUSIC, WITH CRAPPY MIXING AND STILL TRY TO MAKE THE BEST OUT OF IT....(NOT ALL DJ'S OF COURSE...BUT NOW IN DAYS, THE MAJORITY).....I DON'T SEE IT AS BEING FORCED, I THINK I HAVE THE OPTION OF GOING ELSEWHERE OR NOT GOING THERE AT ALL.....A DJ WILL NOT "FORCE" ME TO LISTEN TO ANYTHING...I WILL TUNE HIM OUT AND GET UP AND LEAVE DURING THAT SONG (WASHROOM BREAK TIME KINDA THING) LOL.....SO IF U SEE ME GOING TO THE POTTY ROOM MORE THAN 3 TIMES IN 1 NIGHT....THAT DJ SUUUUUUUCKS!!!! LOL.....AND IF I HAVE TO LEAVE THE "PREMISES" MORE THAN 3 TIMES....I WON'T BE COMING BACK...GUARANTEED!....BECAUSE TO ME PERSONALLY THE MOST MOST MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN A CLUB IS THE DJ!...SINCE WITHOUT MUSIC...IT WOULD NOT BE A CLUB

People in these clubs just stand there looking pretty and the odd slut goes wild.

OMG LATIN CLUBS ARE FILLED WITH SLUTS!!!.....NOT ONLY SLUTTY LOOKING GIRLS BUT GIRLS THAT CARRY THEMSELVES LIKE SLUTS.......AND PEOPLE IN ENGLISH CLUBS LOOK PRETTY BECAUSE FOR ONE, IT'S MAINLY ALL ABOUT THE "SYLISH" LOOK (since a huge percentage of them are European...with the exclusion of Caribbean clubs)....THEY GO ALL OUT, DRESS WELL, MAKE-UP, HAIR...ETC (MEN AND WOMEN)......AND MOST OF THEM DON'T COME FROM A DANCING CLUTURE LIKE LATINOS.....THEY COME FROM A A"SOCIAL" CULTURE...WHERE YOU GO OUT TO (have a few drinks) MEET AND MINGLE WITH PEOPLE AND DANCE TO 1 OR 2 TRACKS IF AT ALL....EVERY CLUTURE IS DIFFERENT......IT DOESN'T MAKE ONE SUCKIER THAN THE OTHER ONE.......THE BEAUTY ABOUT THE LATIN CULTURE......IS THE PASSION, THE DANCEABLE MUSIC AND THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC PLAYED BY A DJ WHO KNOWS HOW TO MIX....LOL

I look at all the gringo latinos inside these clubs that cant dance salsa if there life depended on it.

SO INSTEAD OF JUDGING THEM.....MAYBE STOP AND TEACH THEM.....OR ASK THEM HOW COME THEY DON'T KNOW....BECAUSE MAYBE THEY WERE BROUGHT UP "CANADIANIZED" WITH NON-LATINO FRIENDS AND WERE NOT EXPOSED AS MUCH TO THE LATIN SCENE.....THEN AGAIN NOT ALL SPANISH MUSIC IS FOR DANCING.....EX: LATIN ROCK, ALTERNATIVE,R&B AND HIP HOP IN SPANISH......ETC

*** IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THE SALSA, MERENGUE, BACHATA, REGGAETON ***

These same so called latinos only know aventura and daddy yankee

THE MIRACLE OF COMMERCIALS AND PUBLICITY.....LOL

but pretend to be hardcore latino when its time to pick up chicks.

OMG...HAHAHA....MANY GUYS PRETEND TO BE THIS AND THAT WHEN PICKING UP A "CHICK"....AND WHAT IS A "HARD CORE LATINO" ANYWAY? ...YOU MEAN HE TRIES TO "EMPHASIZE" THE FACT THAT HE IS A "LATIN LOVER" KINDA THING? LOL

Latin nights you are dancing the night away. You can mix and mingle with the entire club if you want. NO FAKE A** GIRLS AND GUYS.

LESS FAKE THAN IN ENGLISH CLUBS...YES! .....BUT ALSO MORE GHETTO LOOKING.....SO YOU SEE IT GOES BOTH WAYS.....LOL

It was an easy decision where i wanted to be but dont get me wrong i like all types of music.

THIS IS TRUE.....I KNOW YOU LIKE ALL KINDS OF MUSIC...ESPECIALLY HOUSE.....YOU'RE ALSO IN A BUSINESS, TO BE OPEN MINDED ABOUT MUSIC AND THE INDUSTRY.....SO WHAT'S UP WITH THIS TOPIC?

I am latino and i speck spanish and dace latin music. Those other night clubs cater to gringos....

WHAT OTHER NIGHT CLUBS? YOU MEAN OTHER LATIN NIGHTCLUBS?

They play there gringo music all night and show love to there gringos first before you. ARE YOU A GRINGO???

THIS LAST PART CONFUSED ME....I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN......

THE BEAUTY ABOUT LATINOS OR OTHER CULTURES BEING RAISED IN TORONTO IS THAT WE HAVE ACCESS AND THE FREEDOM TO CHOSE TO WHATEVER KIND OF MUSIC WE WANT AND EXPERIENCE ALL OTHER CULTURES AND NOT JUST OUR OWN........THIS DOESN'T MAKE ONE CLUB OR CULTURE BETTER OR WORSE THAN THE OTHER ONE.....

A CLUB IS JUST A SOCIAL SETTING....A NEAR BY GET-AWAY FROM YOUR EVERY DAY STRESS......SOMEWHERE TO GO AND JUST LET LOSE AND DROWN YOURSELF IN THE MUSIC.....SOME PEOPLE ENJOYING STANDING BY THE BAR BOPPING THEIR HEADS TO MUSIC AND OTHERS ENJOY DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY.....AND OTHERS ENJOY DRINKING TO GET HAMMERED AND OTHERS ENJOY PICKING UP GIRLS/GUYS.....ETC.....TO EACH HIS OWN REALLY......ONE IS NOT BETTER THAN THE OTHER ONE.....THEY ALL HAVE FLAWS, THEY ALL HAVE ADVANTAGES.....

IF PEOPLE DON'T ENJOY SOMETHING THEY HAVE OTHER O-P-T-I-O-N-S

IF you don't only speak Spanish and hang out Latin places 24/7 and ONLY....it doesn't make you less Latino or Gringoed out....lol.....

You're more "Canadianized" yes or have adapted to the Canadian culture more....but that doesn't make you less of a Latino.....

I once more agree with LB.

The problem MJ, is that some people have only room for one culture in their heads, so they can only choose to have one at a time. It must suck, because if someone is a Latino living in Toronto, and refuse to acquire any of the cultural aspects of Canada, the only thing that's going to come out of that in the future, is something similar to Chinatown but for Hispanics, where most people are completely disconnected from the rest of the city, and live in their own little fake reality, without making the smallest effort to merge into a multicultural society, and be a little bit more socially developed than the rest of the people in the world.

The concept Sabornuevo has of a "real latino" is equivalent to the 16th century concept of a witch. It's stupid, stereotyped, and blatantly ignorant. Plus, it's cynnical, that he boasts about being a "real latino", when he can barely speak Spanish.

Sabornuevo, why don't you tell us a bit more about yourself? Where did you grow up? where were you born? how many years have you been in Canada?

just keep in mind latino kids back home made your shoes in some sweat somewhere for 5 cents a day

This is such a ignorant comment. Mind you I've been told im very ignorant.

Just because the majority of developing countries allow foreign businessmen to build sweatshops and create many jobs does it mean they pay 5cents a day, or even allow child labour. I know this because Im from Honduras, which statistics say to be the poorest economy in Central America, nothing to be proud of, but even in Honduras I've yet to hear about the "5cents a day/ child labour" violations you are reffering to. And i know this because guess what, i got a shi tload of cousins that work in sweatshops, and 2 aunts that work in the offices, and trust me, they dont work for 5 cents a day, even with the exchange rate.

so remember Bonita11, that just because your country may have a low economy does it mean that every type of product was made by a child for 5 cents a day... if anything, you'll hear about human rights violations from Asian, Esatern European, and African nations... seldomly you'll hear them from Latin American countries, not to say they don't happen. because if you notice, alot of Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, ENYCE, Nike,Diadora, KAPPA, and DKNY is made in Latin American countries like Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, Chile, Brasil, and Suriname.

So think about it.. not everything was made because of a human rights violation.

here is a ? to the people in this thread

define some characteristics  that make us latin. Things that we do, that makes other cultures look at us and say that is latin.

Our style of food

Our Language

Our Music

our Dancing

etc???

You stop eating at our restaurants... you stop speaking spanish.... you STOP listening to our music... you stop dancing our music.....you cut that all  out and what are you left with. You will always be latin, that's just dumb to even think that's what i am implying. what i am saying is that you are taking up the gringo culture more then your latin.

hence the name GRINGO LATINO

its easy to call something stupid when faced with a serous opinion of oneself or make up dozen of none relevant scenarios to sugar coat the fact that lots of latinos are distancing themselves from there latin culture

also hence the word...LATIN CANADIANS!! It happens to alot of cultures, generation after generation grow up in canada, it's important to be proud and be educated of your root's but i know for a fact going to privilege or magante isnt what makes me more of a "real latina" it's in my blood, I don't need to dye my hair black, live in a tanning bed, and eat and breathe salsa to know where I came from...but i guess some feel the need to try harder then others

PS. You claim to be sooo proud of being latino and blah blah blah but just keep in mind latino kids back home made your shoes in some sweat somewhere for 5 cents a day

Good night
