This is what I think:

Latin? Hispanic? Quis distinctus? Tergum tunc populus of Mexican progenies prognatus in Iunctus Civitas pocius futurus accersitus Latin Americans utpote they erant non vere prognatus in Mexico they felt term Mexican did non exigo opportunus lemma. Super ut sepius term Mexican eram adsuesco assuesco per a derogatory nota. In 1928 in Corpus Sarcalogos Laredo area a humus of Hispanics spearheaded LULAC League of Latin American Civitas ) iuvo certamen distinguo quod prejudice quod iuvo Hispanics acculturate. Sic quis es nos? Nos Spanish orator vel populus of Spanish heritage es Hispanics vel Hispanos. In terminus is doesn't vere res ultum quis nos dico ourselves Latinos vel Hispanics said Dr. LaFarelle somos todos primos " we're totus cousins usquam. Nos should veneratio nostrum varietas , utor nostrum propinquus affinitas quod exsisto superbus nostri humanitas forensis

IOf you don't get that you shouldn't call yourself Latino

Thats so true...especially the wannabe gang banger latinos with the bandanas and with only the top button of their shirts buttoned up

in Chile i saw young people 'dress up' by tucking their nike t-shirts into their blue jeans and then hitting a bar...the girls dressed hot though

It's funny. I grew up in Nicaragua and came to Canada as a teenager, and back home we made fun of people who went to clubs and danced salsa, merengue and anything "spanish". When they played that music at clubs, it was the time to go sit down and rest. NOBODY danced to that. We all danced to english music. As for fast food, we'd go to McDonald's and stuff 'cause that was the special thing to do. I didn't really get into patriotism and the crazy love for my land until I came here and got nostalgic. Sad but true.

Music is like food, sometimes I feel like eating pupusas, and sometimes I feel like eating chinese food or hamburguers.  Variety is the spice of life.

And yes, I can't dance salsa or bachata; but does that make me less latino than some one who does? or someone who wears those long Scarface shirts?

Let's remember that there are more than 20 spanish speaking countries and that salsa and bachata represents the caribbean region. What about those who don't dance tango, or don't have "El COndor pasa" as part of their music?, aren't they latinos?

In fact, most people in latin america don't dress the way young latinos dress in Toronto.

Acording to sabornuevo, if you don't dance salsa, and you don't listen to salsa, and you don't like to eat salsa, then you're a gringo-latino by default.

Isn't SALSA itself "gringo latina" by origin?

To make a long story short, if you can't dance latin music or speak fluent spanish, or type on TH in english your are a Gringo Latino.
Latino's are not allowed to like other music and remain hispanic.

Even though this post started off as being one the more asinine ones I began to read some of the responses and realized that it does hit a collective nerve among us. I cannot speak for anyone else but myself and will do so...

I came to torontohispano because i was indeed looking for people who have a hispanic background but were not the types I kept meeting in latino clubs in toronto. It seems I kept encountering the stereotypical latino (you know the ones that whites make fun of). I could not understand why that when I 've visited chile, or argentina, or spain, or even miami that I could easily meet intelligent professional latino's who didn't fit the stereotypical image. They didn't go to latino clubs, dance salsa eat the same latino foods. The listened to rock, were interested in foreign cultures including foods and languages, etc. They were in fact very cosmopolitan.

(My theory is that a lot of latinos in Canada are from the rural areas and were not very cosmopolitan when they livd there. Similarly, a lot of Woodbridge Italians and Portuguese are from the rural areas (villages and islands) and have very little in common then the italians from Rome/Milan or Lisbon)

However many latinos here generally seem to be very protective if not insular. They see anything latino as the best and resist the dominate culture. Great for preserving your heritage ...terrible for meeting new (and different) people.

If I may borrow from popular culture the case of the recent Survivor premise. I was total aghast at the racial divisions but then I slowly began to realize something. The show was illustrating the fact that just because you were of the same race it doesn't mean you will get along with each other. I bring up this example because when we moved to Canada my parents made an effort to hook up with other chilenos. However they became aware that the only thing they had in common with a lot of them was that they were from chile.  They in fact became better friends with Canadians.

I tried hanging out in salsa clubs and even learned how to dance salsa because it was a way of meeting other latinos. When I go back to chile and hang out con mi primos no one dances salsa and they all listen to rock.

I still come to the foro because I encounter a lot of latinos who don't conform to the stereotypical notions of what it means to be latino. Something you, Sabornuevo, seem to want to change.

the good think with house music is that it doesn't discriminate any musical influences.... so you can have a house song with rock, congas, hip hop, etc....

and yes... the fashion related to the house music scene is so much better... and I'm not talking about the gotti or gino style...(those two are like the ghetto flash in the hip hop industry)

@Neruda: Your comments are very accurate. In my case, I was already interacting with a few other cultures before coming to Canada, and to think of cultures in terms of right or wrong, only gives way to ever-growing stereotypes and animosity between them. Which incidentally is what we saw in this thread's first post.

I skimmed through this thread but I think care should be taken when voicing what constitutes a 'real Latino' in a country such as Canada.   The definition of 'real Latino' is too subjective but I laugh when music and clubs are used to define who is a 'real Latino'.

The world is too rich for Latinos to needlessly pigeonhole themselves into stereotypical behaviour and interests.

I think I fall in this category.

I really don't enjoy in any way Privilege, like the location but the crowed is waaaay to harsh for my like & the music is not the greatest in my opinion.

Amen!!!

Anyone who thinks Privilege is CLASSY is either under the age of 19, is GHETTO (obviously doesn't know better), and/or is super dooper cool like Danny!

Gimme a freakin' break!!!!

If that makes me "HIGH CLASS" and "ANTI-GHETTO" then hell yeah, sign me up!!!  Who the hell wants to be GHETTO???!!!!

Is being ghetto the "cool" thing to do now???!!!!

  <------I rather be this guy!!!!

Your parents made you hang out with Chilenos? Oh I can only imagine how horrible that must have been for you!

I happen to know some chilenos myself, and they're all a bunch of stoners!

I can totally relate to the comment you made about your parents making efforts to hang out with other Chilenos when you first got here......and how you said that all you had in common was "being from Chile"......which is obviously not enough to build a long lasting relationship on....this has to do a lot with the levels of class, education...etc....

Thank you for your affirmation.

When I've travelled I have met many other Canadians. Some I liked and others I couldn't stand. Just because we were Canadians doesn't mean we had that much in common.
