Another Famous Comic Book Superhero Is About To Make The Leap To The Big Screen
Friday September 29, 2006
First there was Superman, who proved to be faster than a speeding bullet at the box office.

Then came Spider-Man, who drew record audiences into his web.

They were followed by The X-Men and the Fantastic Four, who mostly proved super at the ticket window.

Never let it be said that Hollywood doesn't know a thing or two about jumping on the bandwagon.

The latest iconic comic book that's about to be translated to the big screen comes from the Marvel Comics empire. It's the 1960s character known as Iron Man, and he arrives with a well known but troubled name attached.

Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to play the role of Tony Stark, a brilliant electrical engineer who was injured in the Vietnam War and invented a special suit of armour that allows his heart to keep beating, while giving him access to built-in high tech weaponry.

The movie will deal with those origins but update them to the more modern era, while the storyline will mainly centre on Stark uncovering a plot to - what else? - destroy the world.

The film comes with a $100 million budget and will be helmed by Jon Favreau, an actor-director best known as the man behind the camera on the 2003 Will Ferrell hit "Elf".

Marvel Comics has always specialized in presenting characters with tragic flaws and it appears picking Downey for the lead will reflect that.

The performer, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his role as Charlie Chaplin, has been battling his own inner demons involving drug addiction.

But those involved in the flick insist he's putting that behind him.

"In every casting announcement we've done, people in their mind's eye have their own view of it and let us know about it. We're used to it," shrugs Marvel's  Kevin Feige. "The point is, we looked at everybody, and we found the best person for the role. It's as confident a casting move as we've ever done. The proof will be in the pudding, but he is Tony Stark."

There's no date for the movie's release yet - filming doesn't start until February.
