I am fairly certain that the evacuation from Lebanon was carried through for 2 key reasons.
One - It was very feasible to evacuate the country because Lebanon is so small. Logistically speaking, the task was very simple. A large country would have presented many challenges.
Two - the Lebanese population in Canada is large in comparison to Lebanon itself. If I am not mistaken, Montreal has the largest population of Lebanese people outside of Lebanon.
I think the Canadian government acted responsibly and I do not mind paying taxes to have evacuated the Lebanese Canadians. The evacuation may have saved many lives and that is priceless.
And it is understandable that those who evacuated would return to Lebanon. Theoretically speaking, they would have returned at some point right? The attacks disrupted their lives, families and jobs. Of course they would want to return.
I believe the tab is around 85 million bucks. And 7000 of them have already return. I think those 7000 should pay back, and send letters of appreciation to their fellow canadians for their support. It's about grattitud.
A country DOES have the obligation of bringing back all his citizen/landed imigrants in case of crisis in a foreign country.
That's what THEY also pay tax for and if one day you find yourself in one of those situation (witch I hope you will never be) you'll be more than glad to see the gov. taking care of things and bringing you home.
I agree with u Julie, but this PPL were not living in Canada they just got their citizenship n when back 2 their native country, they were working n living there, had business there n they did not contribute anything 2 this country, only when chaos struck their country they remember they were Canadians 2, I think that so mess up I was reading yesterday that more then half of the PPL who got out of the country when back already what the hell is that.
I think this PPL should pay the Gov. for bringing them back 2 Canada, cause I am not paying taxes so some mother flowers can get out of their country n once the bombing stops go back like nothing, they are Canadians only when they need help mean wile they don't contribute anything 2 out country.

i don't think anyone would question that... but, do you think all canadian tax payers should pay for it? What made the lebanese evacuation different from previous evacuations? If every other person who was previously evacuated from other countries had to pay for it, why not the lebanese?

I read that yesterday and i don't think we should pay for it! It should be something the Canadian government should pay for without having to used tax payers money!
In all instances where Canadian citizens have had to be evacuated from another country it has been the individuals sole responsibility to pay the cost of the evacuation.
In the case where Canadian Citizens had to be evacuated from Lebanon a little while ago, the current government has decided that we the tax payers are going to pay for it. Most of those who were brought back were not residents of Canada and hadn't been for a long time. They haven't paid taxes and now we have to pay for them?
Is this fair?
Further more, the were given immediate access to health care when any other Canadian that changes provinces has to wait 3 months.
