In theory, even if it's a not-for-profit org., the profits the make (and they DO MAKE PROFITS) should be used to eventually become self-sustainable (as is the case, again, of Hispanic Fiesta). They gov/agencies will give you the money to give you a headstart, 'cause it's a given that you will eventually make money. After a few years, the festival is on its own.
As you say, profits should stay in a fund for next year and those for next year, an so on Don’t you think that after 20 years they’d have enough funds to give more incentives to the participants? Or AT LEAST assist the small clubs and organizations in the building of their floats with some considerable cash?! So that we can have a parade como Dios manda? AND in turn be able to charge more to sponsors, food stands, etc… and more people would come out to see it, so that it can get bigger and better ever year? THEY can’t see past the ONE day that this event happens, and that is that If it hasn’t happened after 20 years…. Then it’ll never happen Sad indeed
- The motivation should be representation. Given that there are so many countries in Latin America (and so many different regions/idiosyncracies within any given country) the Latin american parade should one one of the most colourful and varied, if only people were motivated to participate. Besides, there's so much pride and patriotism on every citizen of these countries (I know I'm really really proud of mine), that's it's sad this is not taken advantage of. It shouldn't be so much about the money, but about pride...
Amen! It SHOULD!
But if one want’s to show pride in an affordable way, I guess you get a jersey or a flag As sad as it is for the people that want to participate in the parade, it IS about money Floats.. I mean REAL floats are expensive, VERY expensive Do you think that an organization like, for example, Club Uruguay, is going to fork out a few thousand bucks to SEE if MAYBE they can make a thousand in return with their float!? When they’re probably having a hard time themselves maintaining their own organization? I doubt it
The parade looks like it deserves…. Until some people that really care for the community or have some sense on how to put things together come up, it won’t change That is really too bad

What do you mean a “money making venture”? it’s a “non for profit organization”!!! Motivation?!! Lol…. If I’m not mistaken, I read somewhere that the “incentive” to those who present a float is $1000 for the winner! That’s joke!! The parade itself probably costs them next to nothing (probably nothing) And $1000 would probably cover the cost of renting the flat bed for the float! which small toronto organization would be motivated to build a float??!!! they can barely sustain their OWN organization! -The motivation should be representation. Give the winner a $10,000 incentive and you’ll see some REAL floats come together. Are you telling me an event like this WOULDN’T have 10Gs to give as a prize!? PFFFFTTT!!!

LadyBug.
I know for a fact that the government and several organizations have money in their budgets for this type of events. You just fill out a few applications, get some signatures together and voila! You're given money for it. Plus you have sponsors and advertising and it's a money-making venture. The organizers of these events have a WHOLE YEAR to put it together, but every year, in the case of this Dia de la Hispanidad parade, as as típicos latinos, they wait until the last minute (unlike Hispanic Fiesta, for instance, who start preparations MONTHS IN ADVANCE). If they don't get their sh-it together, this event will eventually disappear, because the way it is right now, it's just depressing and a true embarrassment to the latin community, especially the ones who live in that area.
As for the floats, every year there are committees who, in theory, organize fundraising events to get a float together, and these are done through organizations that represent every country. These people are doing this less and less (7 countries only, this year? Seriously, that's a shame!) It's just that there's no motivation. The whole thing is so disorganized, that people are withdrawing and doing other things instead. Sad, but true.

Not surprised if this were true
I wonder if these so called "non for profit" organizations are obligated to keep their 'books' public That would be interesting to see, I'm sure

(No offense to the guatemalans in the house).
cuantos Hispanic Parade Tiene?
If the parade has been going on for "20 years".....WHY was this year named as the 3rd annual DEFILE HISPANO CANADIENSE.......I'm confused
Also.....where is this "budget" business coming from? How are you sure that the government gives this event so much money?
@ Dogo & Buffy.....since you guys mentioned the money issue....can you please clarify for the rest of us.....how you know for sure that the government gives this particular festival a budget?
I think it would be best to ask the organizers or a city of Toronto councillor about this no? Sort of like going to the direct source.
Sorry, I totally missed this post
I DON'T know if they receive grants form the government. That's why I asked (not that I have any hope in hell of someone answering) This was my question/s:

well people this city doesnt have alot of latinos to begin with..so off course these things will just turn out so/so only.....
look at the west indian community ..theres tons of them here and they have more unity and organization to pull off a huge parade every year
now we cant compare toronto latino to miami new york LA texas etc....its just impossible..
were still the smallest of the smallest minorities here
until the mean time..we still have to deal with the everyday latino stuggle here....especially when it comes to those retards who hear me talk in spanish and think im from "a mexican country"

I somewhat agree with you. I was there on Saturday (Sha! Next time I should get me a program before I travel AAAAALLLLL the way from the boonies for a latin festival.. Genie, it was good to see you... Nice car, BTW... )
Aaaanyway, I'd only been there once before, and only because we were part of a float. I thought that time was better. This year not only was it freezing (not the organizers' fault) and the event took place outside, but it seemed a bit disorganized. Maybe I've just become a snob, but I agree with Dogo, it was cheesy and a bit crappy. I think after 20 something years the organizers should have some experience in putting this event together. And I can never understand why they keep moving the darn thing: for a Dia de la Hispanidad event, shouldn't it at least be in September, closer to when the actual Dia de la Hispanidad is?
Yes Buffy it was nice to see you too! and meeting your rugrats there so cute!!! me enamore de el baby! he was so cute! jajajajaja the car yeah rob wanted to 4x4 the lawn thanks!!
I went on saturday to pick up dinner after a long day of working i just wanted some good food!! and thats what i got! mmmmmm carne asada con arroz ensalda and pupusas!
All i saw was buffy and her family and the future Miss Hispanidad contestants really cute little girls and boys thats it!
I stopped going to this, years ago After seeing it for a few years, it had never improved It used to be pretty disgraceful to the community...So poorly done... I hope it has changed
-- Edited by Dogo at 08:06, 2006-08-28
Disgraceful? how?
Let me repeat that this was years ago, but the whole parade looked like crap. Cheesy and incredibly cheap, and it made our community look just like that I’m sorry, but I was really embarrassed to have other communities see it, and I don't think it reflected our comunity accurately I don’t know how it is nowadays
I also always wondered if this whole thing is done through some sort of multiculturalism funding Anybody know?
I totally agree. I went there last night and it didn't look any different from the last 3 or 4 years that I've gone. Very little improvement and it seemed like there were fewer food vendors this year. The food is my main complaint. I don't think they prepare enough for the volume of people they get at festivals like this. Some stuff should be prepared in advance so that the line ups could go faster. I waited 30 minutes to get pupusas cause they were making them on the spot from scratch and then frying them. I was so hungry I wanted to hit someone because of the wait

I stopped going to this, years ago After seeing it for a few years, it had never improved It used to be pretty disgraceful to the community...So poorly done... I hope it has changed

Well it was my first and I did really know what to expect but I had a good afternoon and even a better evening, chilling out with some of the Foro and Non Foro pple.
@ Ricky, Baina and all the Band, guys........what a good performance regarless what you might think. You sound good, looked good but more than anything else, PEOPLE loved it........hey I was in the crawd ok !
Ohhhh, and Ricky recieved a recognition from ... sorry I forgot the name and the tittle of that man because I stil don't understand what is his function and nobody was able to explain it to me.
Rey Ruiz ? Yup he sang few songs. I was still at the front of the stage and I can't believe nobody new the new song, well, not even 10 pple and they were cting like Luis Miguel fans so it was kind of strange.
