I don't know if I 100% believe that my money is well spent & that a decent % is towards the child & it's needs. I would be more inclined to say NO.
Now I would defenilty love to sponsor a child & mainly cause I know of thier needs & bad conditions, but it would defenitly be a child from Ecuador.
I also would like to meet the child in person & give them my self the things they need, like clothes, pay for thier school, food, & if even possible help fund a humble little house for them to live in. I think that with my fundraising background I can make use of it with my group of friends & family & come up with a day of fun & the funds raise to go to my child.

@ JC: What does she get? ...meaning...christmas cards....and all that stuff....and is it true that it's a write off when you do taxes?
So far she's been sponsoring for 8 months and she's recieved a christmas card, report card, photo, birthday card and a letter. It's not a complete write off when you do your taxes, but you can file it and get a small percentage back.
THat's how tax writeoffs work! no? You write it off as an expense.. you never get the full amount back... on anything Am I wrong?
Impossible! I'm never wrong!

I like this thread, not because Confu finally wrote something interesting..... but because this topic brings back memories when I was a child.....
My parents belonged to the Lions Club International, so they were always doing charity work, so my sis and I would always come along with them and we always spent Christmas with less fortunate (economically) kids...
As a kid I felt jealous that my parents were giving presents to other kids, or that my mom would hold a baby that "wasn't her son or daughter". My parents tried to explain why they did that, but I never really understood until I grew up...
Today I can say that i feel proud of my parents for teaching me such values... and if my financial situation improves I will be looking forward to do the same....
Mc
over...

I have a hard time trusting any of these "children charities"
I can't find the article now, but I had posted one some time ago about how much money the CEO of these charities made and it's ridiculous! I think the head of Unicef made something like 3/4 of a million salary... PFFFT!!!
The only charity I tend to like is Ronald McDonald fund......... every cent you donate goes directly to the fund, and McDonalds forks out all the administative costs out of their own pocket Beside the good PR for the company.... I consider THAT a real commitment

My wife sponsors a child in Peru. She's 11 and the money sent goes towards school and supplies. I think it's a good thing to do, but I am skeptical as to how much of what you donate actually goes to the child. Either the way it's the thought that counts and my wife is happy doing so.

I haven't and don't think I would. I am sorry but I don't think the kids directly benefits from your donation. Ok, I am not saying that there is not straight organisations that are not doing a wonderful job, but lets put it that way, I would not trust the big ones. I've witnessed things and I was disgusted so....
And I have to say as well, that I HATE the way most of them advertise, in the press, they make you feel almost obliged to donate when it should really come from the heart. No, they won't make me feel guilty. If the Canadians wants to feel confortable with their conscience, well, they can just take a trip to Central and South America and work in orfanage (for exemple)for a while and then, come back and tell me how the system work and how much the children recieve from the "supuestamente" donations from those organisation and gov.
So another question ? Will you be ready to BUY a baby when you have no other possibilities ? I am not talking about abducting a child, but buying it from his parents that anyway will put him in the street/ofanage/or let him die. I would, anyway, adoption is also a trafe right because you have to pay the laywers anyway.

No doubt! But in reality, it's not like you'll be giving the money directly to the child! So regardless of what you may be told or how much RESEARCH you may do, there are no guarantees. For all you know the picture of the child you are sponsoring can be sent to several other people as well!!
but that's not the problem, the big dilemma is.... "how the hell do you get out of it"
that's the quest my uncle ask himself for two years now jajajajjaa.... he had call and threaten those ppl w/ lawsuit but they still charge his credit card lol.... actually is not that funny... no wait it is.... after all u don't want to cancel ur major credit card for 30 dollar a month do u???

I've done it for my brother.... its really no big deal though. Think of it this way girl... enough people are giving money to support these funds... so eventually SOME of the money will get to them.
I have thought about sponsoring a child, however i have been told by several people that the money does not really go to the child, but then again how are we to know that?
ITS CALLED RE-SE-ARCH!!!!
