Anyway, I can't believe you returned the book. It's not that bad. Scary, but good. I can't remember what I said in my deleted post, but it was as good as finding the meaning of life. I remember, though, that I said that Carlos Fuentesessesss' book, La Frontera de Cristal, is turning out to be really good.

I had to stop. Like I've stated many a time before, I'm the biggest chicken sh-it in the world, and I was getting too scared. I read over half of the book, though, so I'm intrigued to know what happened. I read the last page and returned the friggin' thing. So let me know what happens.

Hey! no fair! what the heck!? can it possibly be that bad?! did you read Davinci code? how about angels and demons? are you saying i'll probably freak out too?! great. Just flipping great.

This is nothing like the Da Vinci code (haven't read Angels & Demons). There's a lot of interesting info on the vatican and the church, but there's also a lot of stuff on demons and hell and other stuff that was giving me nightmares and daymares and in-betweenmares. Definitely not a book for me. I'm just a coward with a vivid imagination, that's all. It's a good book, though.

oh, so similar to the movie Bedazzled? but sans the comedy? or maybe sort of kind of in a way like Devil's advocate? hmm, maybe i won't be such a chicken caca and read it.

I think I read that book actually but if I did it was at least 10 years ago. Even though I love GM, I don't think there's a lot out there by him worth reading . All you really need to read is A Hundred Years and then you can pretty much stop there. Trust me on that one. That was the first book of his I read and then I embarked on a mission to read aaaaall his work but, because Iiiiiiii AM a giver upper, I only read about 9 or 10.

Nothing else compares to A Hundred Years. The one other book by him that I really liked and have also read multiple times is La increíble y triste historia de la Cándida Eréndira y de su abuela desalmada and strangely enough, it's a spinoff of a character in A Hundred Years. But, unlike AHYOS's brilliant ending, this one is just meh.

Anyway, just my on GM... you might also want to do yourself a favour and please, please, PLEEEEEEEEEEASE stay away from El general en su laberinto.

I don't like GM. I like Ford better. In fact, I drive one-- not because it's good or gooder, but bc it was cheap. Aaaaand it takes me from point A to point B.
Stranger than fiction? Is that like the Pedro Paramo gem?

I kidd, I kidd... I'll watch it.

GL--Too late! i read that one too, and what may make it worse is that i actually bought it, and it's part of my GM collection. But you know, before reading what i'm reading now, i read Of Love and Other Demons.

I kind of liked that one. Although i did end up hating the priest for being such a coward.

Really? Horror? No vonder... I just saw it, read the back and liked what it said and reserved it. I haven't been getting my books from reviews, 'cause I spend more time reading the reviews than the actual books. So I just go and grab. But it is scary. Very interesting, but scary... with good vs. evil and a very descriptive path to damnation and astral plates and evil gorgeous looking women and lawyers without a conscience and serial killers and sultry teenage seductressessesses. (sp?) Oh, and vatican history and St. Peter and Christianity all in one. Heck, i'm just liking it. I read this other book once that I just liked because of what I read in the back of it-- can't remember what it was called-- but it turned out to be about two lesbians, petty thieves, a case of switched identities and set in victorian England. It was awesome!

GL--you're absolutely right, it's exactly the way it is. It's a good book, and it's fast because of it. But i guess maybe i'm tired at the end of the day to not have the usual pauses. Meh. I'll keep reading it until the end!! i'm no giver upper!

Really?! can you give an example in tha book that scared you? i requested that book from the library, soooo i think maybe i should be prepared.

As for the one i'm reading (The Autumn of the Patriarch) it's ok...i'm actually having a hard time getting into it because of the way it keeps going and going. There are no paragraphs or barely any periods. No quotation marks. It's continous. Confusing.

Oooooooooh stream of consciousness! I love those! It's funny...  conversation and thoughts have this exact same structure (or lack thereof ) yet we have no trouble understanding that. Are we too square when it comes to reading? Hmmm.

@ MM: That actually just reminded me of what I wanted to comment with you yesterday. Remember to ask me about Chinese writing.

A scary book? Ooooh, I've always wanted to read one of those. Religiously scary? Blasphemous? Cuz for some raison those are scarier for me. Wait. Who the funk is Scott McBain? He's not some contemporary best-seller crap writer is he?

I'm not some pretentious literarure snob but... I recently read a quote by Socrates and it totally made sense why I like the writers and why some men are geniuses...

"If a man comes to the door of poetry untouched by the madness of the Muses, believing that technique alone will make him a good poet, he and his sane compositions never reach perfection, but are utterly eclipsed by the performances of the inspired madman. "

So you see, Carlos Fuentes will never survive uuuhnless he gets a little craa-hay-zee.

Oh and have you seen the movie Stranger than Fiction? It's actually pretty good, I liked it but it did get me thinking that writing, nowadays, is often just a job - complete with deadlines and all. So phooey on the contemporaries.

Of course! He's Mexican! I can't say I fancy him much though. Well... hmm. I dunno, I'm torn. I do like what I've read so far but, yeah, as you stated earlier, he's one pompous MOFO.  Hay cosas que las siento forzadas, no le fluyen las ideas como a otros. It's like he's got the Nobel Prize for literature in mind when he writes. Plus, he's not very original either. Dicen... y supongo que me consta, que le gusta copiar el estilo de otros. Por ejemplo: La muerte de Artemio Cruz, dicen que es una copia descarada de As I Lay Dying de William Faulkner. I bought Faulkner's book just to see for myself.

So... nueve cuentos, eh? Nueve cuentos de viajeros? As in peregrinos, get it? Yeah, it wasn't funny, I know. It's not La frontera de cristal, is it? I kinda wanna read that one.

Trust me, it's not the language, it's the book. It straight out sucks, no matter what language it's in. A Hundred Years is not bad in it's English translation either. I've read it twice in English and I still like it (of course I've read it three times in Spanish and I love it).

I've tried reading in spanish, and yes, the difference is out of this world. But i tend to take longer reading in spanish than in english. Hence why my grammar in spanish is awful. But i comprendo. Either way i read in english instead.

I think the one by GGM i read in spanish was Memorias de mis p*tas tristes...that one was good, heck all his books are good.

The one i'm reading now is ok, i just started it so i can't get into too much detail.

I read the 12 Cuentos Peregrinos in Spanish a few years back and LOOOOOOVED it... In fact, it's my favourite of all the GGM writings. Carlos Fuentes has a more sober style than Gabo, but I find him funny and irreverent. I don't know, maybe it's just me, 'cause he might also sound pompous and extremely sarcastic. I like reading these authors in Spanish, though. I tried reading a couple of them in English and it just didn't cut it. I got bored right away. A LOT is lost in translation. El Otoño del Patriarca? I dont' think I've read that one. How is it?

I don't know which BOOK thread to write in but this one seems to be 2007-ish.

I just bought a book called, "Girls Night Out".  It's a compilation of short stories from famous writers such as Candace Bushnell (Sex and the City), Emily Giffen (Something Borrowed), and my favorite, Sophie Kinsella (The Shopaholic Series).

The book was kind of pricey (more or less $20) for a paperback but the best part is that ALL proceeds (incl. author royalties) go towards War Child Canada!

http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/item/books-978014305445/0143054457/Girls-Night-Out?ref=Search+Books%3a+'girls+night+in'

The second book I bought is Anne Rice's, "Christ the Lord - Out of Egypt".  I'm only in Chapter 2 but so far so good!    It's obviously a story written as if it was Jesus himself.  Reading past novels of Anne Rice, you know the woman studies history and geography a lot.  She manages to capture Jesus' time and you feel as if you're actually there in Alexandria, Galilea, Nazareth, etc.

That's a cute little book.....the author is Antoine de Saint-Exupery.....In school they forced us to read the book in English, French and Spanish......and personally it sounds cutest in Spanish......

Have you seen the movie?  Watching the cartoon or film, the Principito has no emotion on his face.....he looks like a depressed little kid.....so it's funner reading the book I think.....

I read somewhere that the author was inspired by a salvadorean woman ( probably of french background, just like the woman Jennifer Conelly plays as wife of that scientist who won a Nobel Price) when he wrote "El Principito". Does anybody knows about her?

Has anybody here read " Holly Blood- Holly Grail"? I'm re-starting to read it, it's very interesting but kind of long, however I see that guy Brown "borrowed" quite a lot from this book.

I like this thread.

I just finished "The Turning Angel" - Greg Iles and "Agent 146" - Erich Gimpel

"The Turning Angel" is just a thriller but with lots of twists.  I enjoyed it.  "Agent 146" is the true story of a German spy and his entry into America, the way he got caught, and the way he survived.  I loved it because we're so used to seeing the War from "our" side and this book made me look at it from a German's perspective.  It was pretty cool!  Plus learning the tricks of the trade was a real eye-opener as well!!!

Both books =

I TEND to do that, not always. Because i have read very crap books that had 5 stars..which should have been 5 Zzzzz. Anyway, i haven't read any books about geo-political issues, but these have some interesting reviews in Amazon: Tournament of Shadows: The Great Game and the Race for Empire in Central Asia by Karl E. Meyer One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn Seven Pillars of Wisdom (Modern Classics) by T.E. Lawrence

That's what i do. I also tend to buy books that get good ratings. I try to keep my mini library filled with only 'good reads'.

See, that, I don't do, because the ratings might be goods but what if I don't like it. I usually go around and when I see something that seems interesting to me I check it out.
Plus I don't really have a specific type of book so....
BTW, the other day I wanted to buy one about geo-politic but I didn't know what get, I would like to find something partial that is not trying to get jyst one side of the stroy in your head, bl bla bla.
Guys any idea ?
