I remember watching a story about this guy and he broke my heart!!  This guy has the worst luck!!  I know how hard it is to find a job (I was unemployed for 2 freakin' months!).  I know some of you are strapped for cash, but any donation will help.  $5?!  $10?

Michael Zubiak has seen the worst of humanity.

But he’s also seen the best.

We first told you about the job seeker’s plight in December, when he used his last dime to post a billboard downtown pleading for an employer to give him a chance, after being unable to stand out from other resumes.

When that failed to get a response, Zubiak became desperate, taking out a newspaper ad to sell some of his valuables to keep his disabled wife and his life afloat.

Unfortunately his offer was answered by more bad news on Wednesday – two home invaders who brutally beat the beleaguered man in a robbery that left him badly disfigured and in the hospital.

When we updated the horrible crime last week, the 44-year-old was suicidal, unable to determine how he could possibly provide for his family as he looks at medical bills he can’t afford and job prospects that seem dimmer than ever.

“I can't even consider sending out a resume,” he wailed from his hospital room, his swelled face making him almost unrecognizable.

“I mean can you see walking up to your place of business saying, ‘hi, can I have a job with you as an office manager?’”

But after being ignored for so long, his plight touched a nerve in many viewers, and we were deluged with an avalanche of offers to help this Toronto everyman.

“I was shaken, it was the first time we helped a individual in such a situation,” explains local businessman Peter Taran, who offered money to help the Zubiaks. “We wish him all the best, it was simply terrible.”

Electrical inspector Jo Gajdacs isn’t a rich man. But he knew he also had to help.

“It disturbed me greatly, I couldn't sleep that night,” he relates. “I had to call your station to find out how I could help out. Something. Just a little something to help the guy out get him back on his feet.”

Other offers came by email, letter and fax, a heartfelt outpouring that’s left this victim of crime and circumstances going from hopeless to hopeful in less than a week.

“It overwhelms me because I really didn't think anyone cared about me,” he notes emotionally. “I only thought one person cared about me and that was my wife.”

Now he knows better.

And for the first time in years, Zubiak is looking forward to a future he was sure he’d never have. “It gives me some hope,” he admits.

So does the fact two men have now been charged in this brutal crime.

A trust fund has been established to help Michael and Kat Zubiak recover further. So far, more than $700 has been raised. If you’d like to help add to that total, you can contribute at any CIBC branch or by mail to:

CIBC,
Commerce Court West,
199 Bay St.,
Toronto, Ont.
M5L 1G9.

Transit number: 00002
Account number: 82-06015

The fund will remain active for the next three weeks.
