Are you implying that my explanation was insufficient? Oh! I love this song!

Muy bien senorita Lahtina... u got almost all of them, u get a gold star! lol

Here are the answers for anyone else who was interested.

Answers:

1. About 71 percent of the earth's surface is covered by water.

2. The single cells in the brain communicate through electrical and chemical signals.

3. No. Dinosaurs went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago. Modern humans did not appear until around 200,000 years ago.

4. Darwin's theory of species origination says that natural selection chooses organisms that possess variable and heritable traits and that are best suited for their environments.

5. A year, 365 days, is the time it takes for the earth to travel around the sun. A day, 24 hours, is the time it takes for the earth to spin around once on its axis.

6. Solar radiation sunlight is scattered across the atmosphere by a process called diffused sky radiation. The sky is blue because much more short-wave radiation -- blue light -- is scattered across the sky than long-wave radiation -- red light.

7. Rainbows can be seen when there are water droplets in the air and the sun is shining. Sunlight, which contains all colors, is refracted, or bent, off the droplets at different angles, splitting into its different colors of red, yellow, blue, etc.

8. Influenza viruses and others continually change over time, usually by mutation. This change enables the virus to evade the immune system of its host so that people are susceptible to influenza virus infection throughout their lives. Bacteria mutate in the same way and can also become resistant if overtreated with antibiotics.

9. About 3.8 billion years; they're bacteria-like organisms.

10. Adding salt to snow or ice increases the number of molecules on the ground surface and makes it harder for the water to freeze. Salt can lower freezing temperatures on sidewalks to 15 degrees from 32 degrees.

Extra credit: Seasons occur because the earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. At certain times of year the top half of the earth leans to the sun and therefore gets more sun and has summer. When that same half of the earth leans away from the sun it gets less light and has winter.

Think you know you know your science? Recently, several science gurus -- Nobel Prize winners, institute heads, teachers and others who spend most of their time thinking about science -- were asked, "What is one science question every high school graduate should be able to answer?" Take their quiz and see how you do.

1. What percentage of the earth is covered by water? Ooh, ooh!! 70-75% or in fractions 3/4 of the earth's surface.

2. What sorts of signals does the brain use to communicate sensations, thoughts and actions? ooh, ooh... electrochemical signals... right?

3. Did dinosaurs and humans ever exist at the same time? No, although I liked that show from like the 70's where they did. What was that show called?

4. What is Darwin's theory of the origin of species? The evolution of organisms (something something) through the law of natural selection (something something). Wait... I'll get back to you on that one. May I use the washroom, Mr. Phantasma? Where's the hall pass?

5. Why does a year consist of 365 days, and a day of 24 hours? Por el movimiento de traslación y de rotación respectivamente. Ha!

6. Why is the sky blue? Algo acerca de las capas atmosféricas y la desviación de los rayos solares.

7. What causes a rainbow? Debido a la descomposición de la luz blanca al pasar a través de un prisma. Quién descubrió este efecto? Newton.

8. What is it that makes diseases caused by viruses and bacteria hard to treat? Hmmmmmm... viruses cannot be cured, plain and simple. LOL I dunno. Let me get back to you on that one.

9. How old are the oldest fossils on earth? Datan de la era pre-cambrica... some 500 million years ago.

10. Why do we put salt on sidewalks when it snows? Porque la presencia de los iones de la sal hace que las moléculas de agua se unan a ellos por su carácter bipolar. Blah, blah, blah, Y entonces la velocidad de congelación es menor. Ok, I'm bored of this one.

Extra credit: What makes the seasons change? Porque el movimiento de la tierra alrededor del sol, es decir, el movimiento de traslación es de forma elíptica and because of the earth's tilt. Yeah, I hate spanglish but somethings I can only explain in Spanish. Ok, yeah... I know why, in my head but I suck at explaining, I always have but I used to get credit for my lenghty explanations. LOL

If this quiz wasn't as easy as you thought it would be, you're not alone. According to a recent National Science Board survey, 90 percent of Americans are interested in science, but only 15 percent consider themselves well-informed. In high schools, only 60 percent of students complete a general biology class, while only 40 percent complete a general chemistry class and a scant 27 percent complete a physics class, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Even if you did learn basic science in school, these questions might be tough to answer, according to O. Roger Anderson, professor of science education at Teachers College at Columbia University. "People are so deeply involved in their family lives and professions," Anderson said. "How are they supposed to remember this stuff?" Source (no the answers are not here) To comply with the first Foro mandate... I was able to answer about 9 out of 10 plus the bonus question which makes me about as smart as your average grade 12... oh how proud my mom must be hehehehe

Send me the answers, Mr. Phantasma, please.

1. i think it's about 70%

2. still thinking about it

3. No

4. evolution

5. year = 365 days b/c that's how long it take the earth to make one full orbit around the sun; 24 hours in a day b/c division of day and night (12 hours each thanks to Sumerians), it's also how long it take the earth to revole once on its own axis

6. you covered that one!

7. something about light spectrum and sunlight in the atmosphere cutting through raindrops

8. i think it's cause viruses and bacteria are always mutating so they become resistant to new medications...that's why there is no cure for the common cold

9. several billion years i would imagine

10. not really sure!

I was never good at science, I did pass grade 9 science though!  These questions brought back some interesting memories around the bunsen burner and the nasty weather unit we spent an entire 3 weeks on in grade 10. I hated it!

Nope. Cause then the Sky over the prairies would be green...

Its because the Earth's atmosphere scatters the sun's light as it passes through it, absorving most shorter wavelenghts (red, orange, etc) and letting through longer wavelenghts like blue and cyan.

see... Thank you Bill Nye!

I got the answers at home. I figure Id post them once more people guessed.

Think you know you know your science? Recently, several science gurus -- Nobel Prize winners, institute heads, teachers and others who spend most of their time thinking about science -- were asked, "What is one science question every high school graduate should be able to answer?"

Take their quiz and see how you do.

1. What percentage of the earth is covered by water?

3. Did dinosaurs and humans ever exist at the same time?

4. What is Darwin's theory of the origin of species?

5. Why does a year consist of 365 days, and a day of 24 hours?

6. Why is the sky blue?
