Objectively, Mexico underperforms.

Though, I think they're destined to be a great soccer nation (like Brazil), as soon as they manage to consistently produce quality soccer players of a certain size and weight.

Size matters!

I think it will happen over the next 20-30 years.

World Cup 1978 History

  • Year: 1978
  • Host: Argentina
  • Participating Teams: 16
  • Canada: Finished 4th in CONCACAF final round qualifying

A troubled political climate threatened to derail the 1978 World Cup tournament even before it began.

A number of countries expressed concern about playing in Argentina, given the government's record on human rights. Among the thousands of people killed under the military dictatorship of General Videla was Omar Actis, president of the World Cup Organizing Committee, who was assassinated by the guerrillas.

The miliary junta guaranteed there would be no violence during the tournament, which went off without a major incident of violence.

Despite a widespread call to boycott the event, all of the top soccer playing nations agreed to attend, provided they qualified. Those who failed to make the cross-Atlantic trek included England, Yugoslavia and USSR.

The 1978 final saw France make a return engagement after a 12-year hiatus but their appearance would be short-lived as they failed to advance past the first round, suffering losses to both Italy and Argentina.

Tunisia made history by becoming the first African nation to win a match at the World Cup when they beat Mexico 3-1. Tunisia later held defending champions West Germany to a goalless draw, but it wasn't enough for advancement to the second round.

Scotland qualified for the World Cup as Britain's sole representative and, with the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness in the lineup, expectations were high that the team would advance to the second round for the first time in their history. But alas, a loss to Peru and a tie against Iran scuttled their hopes for advancement however, the team did go out on a high note, defeating the Netherlands 3-2.

All of the pre-tournament favorites advanced to the second round with relative ease except for the Netherlands, who were without premier player Johan Cruyff who elected not to play due to the political situation in Argentina.

After beating newcomers Iran 3-0, the Dutch side settled for a scoreless tie against Peru before losing 3-2 to Scotland. Still it was enough to get them into the second round, which saw them paired with Italy, West Germany and Austria. Led by Rob Rensenbrink, the Dutch team found their soccer legs with a 5-1 win against the Austrians, knocking off the Italians 2-1 and tying 2-2 against the Germans. Italy's loss and the Austria's 3-2 upset of the Germans vaulted the Netherlands into the final.

In the second group, a struggle emerged between South American rivals Argentina and Brazil.

After each team scored a win in its opening match and battled to a tie against each other, the Brazilians appeared set to move into the final with a 3-1 win over Poland. That left Argentina with the daunting task of winning by four goals against Peru in its final match. Sparked by the tournament's leading scorer and the mysterious absence of Peru's top goaltender, the host nation scored a convincing 6-0 win to join the Netherlands in the final.

Kempes would again emerge as the hero, opening the scoring in the final before the Dutch equalized on a goal by substitute Dick Nanninga. The score stayed that way until 14 minutes into overtime when Kempes struck again for what proved to be the winning marker. Then with five minutes left to play, Daniel Bertoni booted the third goal for Argentina, who won their first title after reaching the final for the first time since 1930.

World Cup 1930 History

  • Year: 1930
  • Host: Uruguay
  • Participating Team: 13
  • Canada: Not invited to participate

largely due to the Olympics' restrictions against professional athletes, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) created a new tournament, which was to be open to all member nations. In 1929, the Barcelona congress voted that Uruguay would celebrate the country's 100th year of independence by hosting the first FIFA World Cup.

There were no qualifications for the first World Cup tournament. Instead, teams were invited by the host nation to participate. Due to the long and costly trip across the Atlantic, very few European teams chose to take part. Two months before the tournament was set to begin, it appeared there would be no European representation until Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia set sail for the eight day journey across the Atlantic. They were joined in Uruguay by Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and the United States.

The entire tournament would be staged in the capital of Montevideo where a new 95,000 seat stadium had been built. However, due to heavy rains the stadium was not completed until five days before the start of the tournament.

The teams were drawn into four groups, and the first match of the first ever World Cup saw France beat Mexico 4-1 with Lucien Laurent having the honour of scoring the first ever goal in tournament history. The semifinals pitted Argentina against the United States while the hosts Uruguay faced Yugoslavia. The Argentinians, led by Stabile, scored an easy 6-1 win while Uruguay advanced to the finals by the same 6-1 score.

The home side struck first just 12 minutes into the decisive match. Argentina equalized just eight minutes later and took the lead on a controversial goal by Stabile, who appeared to be off-side when he accepted the pass. Uruguay emerged from the halftime break to even the score and in the 68th minute Santos Iriarte broke the deadlock with his goal. After Stabile hit the crossbar, Uruguay sealed the win on a goal by Castro in the game's final minute.

For the only time in World Cup history, there was no third place match.

  • Year: 1982
  • Host: Spain
  • Participating Teams: 24
  • HOW CANADA FARED: Failed to qualify. Finished fourth in final round of CONCACAF qualifying with 1-3-1 record. (Honduras & El Salvador qualified)

Under new rules, 13 teams qualified from Europe, three from South America, two from Africa, two from Asia/Oceania and two from CONCACAF (Central and North America). Host Spain and defending FIFA World Cup champions Argentina received automatic bids.

The new tournament format broke down into three different phases: The first round consisted of six groups of four teams with the top two nations advancing; a second round with four groups of three teams from which the top nation in each group qualified; and finally the semi-finals and final.

Tournament favourites France, West Germany and Italy all struggled to advance to the second phase. A tie with the Czech's in the final game of the opening group phase was enough for the French to sneak through behind Group D winners England while the Germans recovered from an opening game shock loss to Algeria to finish first in Group B with a win over Austria in its final game. The Italians, after a pair of draws against Poland and Peru, found themselves in a life and death struggled to advance in their final game against Cameroon. A 1-1 tie forced the matter to be decided on goal differential, which barely swung in Italy's favour.

All three teams discareded their opening round jitters and went on to win their respective groups in the second phase with Italy knocking off both defending champions Argentina and their South American counterparts Brazil, in what many have dubbed one of the greatest World Cup matches ever played.

The semifinals pit Italy against Poland and West Germany against France. Paolo Rossi carried over his goal scoring magic from the second round, notching both goals in Italy's 2-0 win. In the second semifinal, West Germany and France finished regulation time tied 1-1. In extra time, the French side got goals from Tresor and Giresse just six minutes apart and looked ready to book their ticket to the final. But in a span of 10 minutes, the Germans fought back on goals by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Klaus Fischer, sending the match to a dreaded shoot-out.

Dominique Rocheteau gave France a 3-2 lead when Uli Stielike of Germany recorded the first miss. Didier Six had a chance to seal the French victory, but he too came up wanting, opening the door for Pierre Littbarski to notch the equalizer and prolong the penalty shootout. After Platini and Rummenigge made it 4-4, Maxime Bossis missed for the French side while Horst Hrubesch scored the match winner, leaving the French side in disbelief over what might have been.

The semifinal victory appeared to have taken its toll on the Germans, who - after playing to a scoreless first half - succumbed to the Italian side in a 3-1 loss. Led by Paolo Rossi and 40 year old netminder Dino Zoff, the Italians joined Brazil

Okay that is sooooooooooooooooooo true!!  World cup isn't even here yet and my husband is going on about how Argentina was put in a crappy group on purpose  I swear he is already singing that tune.  I tell him it doesn't matter what group anyone is in because if you want to be WORLD CHAMPION you will need to beat EVERY single team anyway.

I do watch the World Cup though.

I guess it's all about the hype around it.

I like watching people suffer when their teams lose........specially the Italians and Argentinians........mainly 'cause they'll come up with the most ridiculous excuses........the conspiracy theories are the best ones!

After all this trash talk (wich I stop reading after the 2 page) the bottom line is that Ecuador is in and we as Ecuadorians are very happy about it, just like any1 else would be if their country was in. Win or Lose, we will always be proud of our team and just like any1 else we are not going to let others come and rain on our parade. We never thought this thread would get out of control but is part of what makes the WC the WC, a little bit of trash talk doesn't kill any1 it just makes it so much better but like i said before, there is a fine line to everything. Anyways, good luck to all the other teams and no matter who wins the cup lets just hope is a Latin American country because at the end of all this trash talk thats what we all are. X@vier

I agree X you guys should be happy you made it into the last two world cups.  I just think Danny is a bit annoying so people enjoy raining on his parade  It's great you guys are in and hopefully your team will make you proud.
@Danny....Ecuador is doing well no doubt but it will still be a while before you can talk SHIT about soccer in Peru....you guys have a LONG way to go b4 you can do that.

it already has

Hay buenos jugadores argentinos, claro... en europa juegan los mejores del mundo entero, no sólo de argentina.

No sé qué mundial verías, pero en Corea, Verón no hizo nada de nada... tendría mala racha por aquella época, me imagino.
