Emergency Rally against Immigration Raids
 
Toronto, Saturday, April 1st, 2006  4pm meet at north-west corner of Dufferin Grove Park, in front of rinkhouse (on Dufferin, just south of Bloor)
Following closely on the heels of a dramatic increase in the deportation of Portuguese families, immigration raids have taken place at Dufferin Mall and other nearby areas where members of the Portuguese, Latin American, and Caribbean communities have been asked to provide immediate proof of immigration status.Reports allege that entire families are being detained while others have been ordered to leave the county on short notice.  These raids are illegal, contravening both the Charter and the Immigrant and Refugee Protection Act.  Since frontline workers report that families are too terrified to leave their homes, even to buy groceries, please bring non-perishable food for distribution.  A follow-up rally will be held at noon on April 8th, at Dufferin  Grove Park.

1.            Recent crackdown at Dufferin Mall by Canadian Border Services Agency. Laundromats were raided and on Sunday two malls were shut down. We think some people have been picked up for detention centres, we’re still not sure where most folks have been taken and are looking into this. There were buses for people without status to take them away. Caribbean, Portuguese, and Latin American communities seem to be targeted. We’ve heard that Montreal is also experiencing similar sweeps.
2.              2.    A "Know Your Rights" document for non-status people dealing with enforcement officers is being produced and translated into Spanish and Portuguese. We will distribute this widely to affected communities as soon as it’s ready.
3.              3.    For legal help for people who want to take legal action, contact: ·     Downtown Legal Services – 416-934-4535 ·     Roach, Schwartz & Associates – 416-657-1465 ·     Carranza Barristers & Solicitors – 416-633-1065 ·     Parkdale Community Legal Services – 416-531-2411 This information will also be posted on NOII website.
4.              4.    We are collecting anonymous personal accounts of people’s experiences with immigration sweeps/raids.
