I agree....the more one reads the more you grasp it.....but... This is something that is and should be taught in schools....that's how I learned....so YES it can be taught....and better if you study in Spain because they don't pronounce the C and Z like an S....which at the end only confuses people in the written part..... But that is only one country.....compared to the other 19 or 20 who speak it the other way and eventually write it like they speak it.... Just like arguing with someone (an Ecuadorian in this case) and trying to explain to him that PROFECIA se escribe con C.....just to get an answer like.....but I went to school in Ecuador and that's how they teach it there so it's right..... ...what do you say to that when every book on earth spells it with a C..... He must have made a mistake... evidently it's written 'profecía' in Ecuador. Ecuadorian isn't a different language... yet . Errors of that caliber on promotional materials simply make the entertainers look like amateurs. Can you picture spelling mistakes on the Coldplay concert posters/flyers?

Central and northern spaniards have the advantage of distinguishing c/z and s, but not g/j, y/ll, v/b, the 'h' is just as silent... and they still have to distinguish between the ce,ci/ze,zi though words with ze,zi are relatively rare in spanish. There's no substitute for spending many hours reading and writing a language.
