Woman survives 5 days adrift By Sebastien Berger in Bangkok (Filed: 08/03/2006) An Australian yachtswoman survived five days adrift in a small dinghy in the Malacca Straits by drinking her own urine, she revealed yesterday. Dominique Courteille, 57, a mother of four from Perth, went missing from Koh Lipe, an island off Satun, in southern Thailand, a week ago. She was returning to her 35ft yacht, Sonnet, from shore when she was swept away. An air and sea search was called off after three days and her crew gave up hope of rescue. But a trawler found her hundreds of miles away in Indonesian waters and took her to Phuket where she was kept in hospital with dehydration and severe sunburn. She said: "To survive, I knew that I had to manage myself. I swam and held the boat by day to avoid the sun and I had to drink my urine." She had only 150 yards to cover from the island to her yacht when her dinghy's motor failed. She tried to row but the current and high wind swept her into the straits. I never lost faith," she said. "I prayed to my god. I knew I would survive." Two colleagues on the yacht did not share her optimism. When the search was called off they dropped flowers over the stern of the yacht in memory of her.
