REALLY??
I HAD NO IDEA.....
I THOUGHT THAT EVEN RECORDING SOMETHING WOULD COUNT....
SO THEN HOW COME AMERICAN IDOL SAYS....A HUGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ARE TUNED IN...ETC...ETC....AND PEOPLE ARE EITHER RECORDING IT.....OR WATCHING IT LIVE WITH NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

you should understand that that is a marketing strategy.

Phanta is right, TV ratings are measured by a sample of people...it would be interesting to see the demographics on that sample group.

They're on the website I think. I wonder what the Canadian equivalent is.. TV Buff???

PLS READ BELOW: Jamie Foxx - Music Special Controversy on NBC-please read Please take the time to forward the below message to everyone in your address book.NBC is not doing any marketing & publicity on Jamie's Music Special on NBC because he stood his ground and wouldn't have any white guest as they requested. To make it even worse he had two controversial guest stars, that do not fit the "NBC profile" on his show.Tune in to find out who they are. They are purposely putting his show up against the second week of American Idol in hopes that it will fail. This will give them the excuse to never give another black person a music special because "it doesn't work". Let's show them that it does work, and that we support each other.Tivo or DVR Idol, and watch Jamie. J Foxx making history on NBC.This is the first time NBC has ever aired an entire young urban African American cast on a music special. We need to show support. This was not an easy sell for Jamie and he stood his ground to make it happen the way he saw fit. JAMIE FOXX MUSIC SPECIAL WILL BROADCAST WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25TH @ 8:00PM on NBC.PLEASE MAKE IT A POINT WATCH! On January 25, NBC will air Foxx's one-hour primetime TV special,"Jamie Foxx: Unpredictable." The show is a musical journey of Jamie's life, tracing his roots back to his hometown of Terrell, Texas, where he was raised in the church and became a classically trained pianist. The special will feature songs from UNPREDICTABLE and other original music by Jamie as well as guest appearances by Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, The Game, Snoop Dogg,Angie Stone and Common. I know Wednesday night is bible study night for some.  I know it's extreme but leave your t.v. on NBC so it will count towards the ratings. How does Nielsen Media Research know who is watching? The way that Nielsen Media Research finds out about who is watching is to measure what a sample of television viewers are watching. For our national ratings estimates, we use a sample of more than 5,000 households, containing over 13,000 people who have agreed to participate. In a specially selected sample of homes, Nielsen Media Research technicians install metering equipment on TV sets, VCRs and cable boxes (and even satellite dishes). The NielsenTV meters automatically and invisibly keep track of when the sets are on and what the sets are tuned to. These meters are connected to a central "black box," which is actually a very small computer and modem. Information from the meters is collected by the black box, and in the middle of the night all the black boxes call in their information to our central computers.

         huh??!?!
