That part about the "going into the fictitious story" reminded me of that comment that McOsiris made on another thread about the "Chilean Complaining syndrome". LOL. Next time someone asks "how are you" just start complaining about how ur having a crappy day, your aunt is in the hospital, your dog got run over.... I can picture McO doing this. LOL
hahahahahaha.......
and the funny part is that I've done it....

This morning I was walking by someone who said "Good Morning! How are you?" as they walked right by me. I barely got a chance to say "Good! Thank You!". Now....here is my question to you..... What to do you think is more rude..... To walk right by someone without saying "Hi How are you?"?? Or to actually say the words...and not mean them???? I tend to walk right by people and not say anything. Some people tend to take this as being rude...or SNOBBY!!! lol......I think it's better than to say "how are you?" and not mean it. One day when someone asks you how you are.....you should try going into a fictitious life story......and see how they react....
I hear u Bainaman. At my previous job, I never said good morning to anyone cause I had been there for 5 years and I couldn't stand them anymore. And I also got called "Antisocial" and "Snobby" but oh well. At my new job, since it's a more professional, corporate setting, I just say the general "good morning" to everyone. I only really chit chat to those who come up to me and start the chit chat (which is usually the I.T. guys only when they're coming to fix my computer. LOL).

I gotta agree with Dogo (huh?). I've had that happen to me a lot here in Canada. It catches you off guard, that's for sure but to me it's not rude at all. It's actually quite nice.

Are you talking about work, or just walking down the street?
If you don't say "hi" at work.... no wonder they think you're a snob, you just rude dude!!! LMAO!!
BTW, my interpretation Of "hi how are you?" is just as saying "what's up" "goodmorning" etc. It's just a greeting, doesn't necesarily mean I want to know how you're doing, or viceversa..... it's just polite, be nice bro! LOL!

I say "good morning" to everyone in the office and to the ones that i like, i stop and chat with them!! It's just polite to say something to everyone. It's kind of rude if you don't!
To walk right by someone without saying "Hi How are you"
I think we should answer to the one that do take the time to salute us. It doesn't mean that I am going to stop and engage a conversation.
At work, I say " Hi ; Good morning ; etc..." everyday, but there is only fewer people with who I will be interested to reaylly know how they are doing and those are the only one I will ask.

In the office I say "Good morning", I don't bother to say "how are you" because I really don't care, if I wanted to know I would ask...and really the only answer you'll get is "fine thank you". Would you really tell someone that you are not doing fine??
If I was to be approched by a stranger I think I would just say Good morning and then walk away quickly because you never know what they are trying to sell to you or ask you questions about.
I also always say "Hello", "Hi" or "Good morning. How are you?" and smile, always. It's simply polite. Most people don't mean it, but it's better then just passing by and being quiet, in my opinion.
I'll say nothing, but will surely tip off my hat to the ladies. My 8 gallon cowboy hat. Girls really dig that (once they are done dusting the snow off their clothes)
I find it funny when instead of saying hi, how are you? you ask something else but they still answer u with fine, thank you X@vier
LOL! that is so true ... But if you really don't mean the "how are you?" just the saludo as Genie says will do or even just a smile or some type of acknowledgement.
I ask people I don't care about how they are all the time. I walk into work with a smile and ask everyone until I get to my office....."Good morning....how are you".......Good morning ...how are you.....oh me I am fine thanks....good morning....how are you.......
I don't really give a crap most of the time but I do it to be nice....I guess that's not very nice but it makes me feel like I am being nice
