ATTENTION ONTARIO DRIVERS: HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) Lanes

Diamonds were always said to be a girl’s friend.

But Ontario’s Transportation Ministry insists they’re really a driver’s best friend.

The province’s first high occupancy vehicle throughway – or HOV lanes – are set to open on two on of the busiest thoroughfares in the G.T.A. next week.

Drivers with two or more people in the car will be able to sail by in the left diamond lane on Highway 404 southbound from Highway 7 to the 401, and in both directions on the 403 between the 407 and the 401.

Toronto motorists are used to the idea, of course. Many local routes already sport the diamond lanes, but as anyone with a car knows, few actually obey the rules.

You won’t be able to do that on the highways – the HOV stretch is in effect 24 hours a day, not just the rush hour, and cops will be watching you like a hawk to ensure you don’t cheat.

“The penalties range from $60-500, there is three demerit points for that,” warns O.P.P. Sgt. Cam Woolley. “And we’ll be ready.”

The government figures it’s the first step towards reducing gridlock and predict the time for many trips will be cut in half.

“I would like to encourage everyone to make use of these lines, and get where you want to get quicker,” pleads Transport Minister Harinder Takhar.

The $100 million pilot project officially begins December 13th, and more will likely follow if the 14 kilometre-length lanes are a hit.

Drivers who are sick of being stuck in endless delays are looking forward to the debut.

“It’s terrific,” praises one traffic jam weary motorist. “I don’t know how we live like this, but we’re not supposed to.”

Do you like the idea of carpool lanes on highways?
