Where I come from racism is not such a big problem as clasism. Which to me is the same type of discrimination based on a different factor, and it's as bad of a problem as racism in latin america.

I was not raised to be racist or clasist. I was raised to be aware and critical of the information that gets to me in any form. I believe in judging a person for the way he/she is, but I don't believe in judging an entire race for any reason.

I think an important word that I didn't read on this thread is stereotyping. Which is the main gateway for racism to enter our heads.

A place like Toronto should teach us to treat people as INDIVIDUALS and not to categorize them by the way they look, or by their race.

But on a serious note, it's not about the jokes. I make racial jokes myself or laugh at them if they are funny. However, I don't consider myself a racist because that's just bad. But, if I avoid certain neighbourhoods at certain times because they are black neighborhoods on a preconceived notion that they are dangerous because of the people who live there, am I not being racist?

And what about "Hotel Rwanda"?, Hutus killing Tutsis by the thousands just because there are some minor differences among them such as having the nose a bit (may be 1/4 ") longer.

 Oh!, by the way, I have friends from all backgrounds, I keep in touch with them and have good memories of gone work places or college day's.  One of the best ways to deal with people from other races is by being aware that everyone is racist in some degree, all we can do is try to be the least racist posible by recognizing thoughts than can influence our perception of people. And that we ourselves can be the subjects of their own thoughts.

  One muslim african woman friend of mine once asked me: Why are you latino men so hot?, I said,... oh!, that's hollywood my friend.

 Well, I like being consider hot, but I also gotto work for a living; being "hot" won't help me find a job in real life situations.

PLATO couldn't have put it betta himself!  People are ignorant and sadly, they are too afraid of things that are different or unknown to them...how do we deal with racism? 

a) replace them with positive attributes of a culture...a stereotype really only focuses on da negative aspects of a culture anyway

b) looking at Russell Peters, he's a minority that makes fun of other minority groups...parody is a GREAT way of letting people see the stupidness of their comments

c) make a conscious effort to NOT make racist comments either as a joke or in a conversation about another race

Until you've been the victim of a racist comment or someone close to you has been treated unfairly because of racism, it doesn't really hit home about how much it hurts, trust me i kno
