I think that with Dora being so famous even little kids from other backgorunds are learning the language.  Even one guy at the work place new words like abuela cause his little boy repite them at home, hahaha!, that's funny.

I don't have kids yet but when I do I'm talking to them only in Spanish. And I'll be damned if they start speaking like a chicano. NO to Spanglish.

I don't have children but I will still respond....got enough nieces and nephews to be acquainted with the topic....LMAO.... I think parents should speak spanish to their kids from a very young age, in fact spanish should be the first language they should learn if they want them to speak it. After kids start to go to school is going to be very hard for them to learn it, even to actually like Spanish. I have nieces and nephews that don't want to have anything to do with the spanish language and I think that's a pity. But that's because the parents haven't taught them to be more appreciative of their roots.

I agree with you!

I also think that by speaking to our children in spanish we are also teaching them about our culture and where we came from. It is important to keep our culture alive specially when we are soooo far away.

I'm a horrible mother!!! My kids understand Spanish but don't speak it very well.  The reason I never spoke to them in Spanish is because I don't feel confident enough in my Spanish speaking abilities.  (It's really sad, I clam up like a turtle when people start talking to me in Spanish)  *hangs head in shame*  My parents and grandparents spoke to me in Spanish and that's the main reason I know it.  I grew up in Scarborough, where everyone was either white or black so Spanish was only spoken at home. My children both speak fluent Spanish.......So fluent that when my oldest son speaks English he sounds like he just got of the boat

I told them that I don't speak English that way they keep talking to me in Spanish and if they do say something in English I say I don't understand.
