If you are not clear about whether you can or cannot tell her. Then just go to your boss and ask him if it is possible/proper for you to tell her. If he says yes, then great. If he says no, then at least you have your conscious calm, because you wanted to, but you really couldn't.
...I still think the anonymous note is the best choice though. (only if you are not the only one who knows).
I think the answer is OBVIOUS.....if you are even thinking about it then CLEARLY you are really not that close with her!!! Don't tell her...you are not good enough friends with her and when your boss sees that she is not al all surprised by her being let go he will KNOW it was you. Perhaps he is thinking of a new position for you or something.....testing you....seeing if you are professsional enough.
Now if you don't care much about your current job or what your boss thinks than tell her even if you guys are not that close.

If I was the one let go, I would SURE want to have a heads up and know before hand so to be prepared… HOWEVER, It’s not her we trying to help – Instead, it’s Chica_wow, who was told likely IN CONFIDENCE by her boss that the other girl will be let go… If I was you, I would mind my own bizwacks and keep my mouth shot. You would be betraying your bosses trust in you.
Anything could happen, they could change their mind, she may slip and say you told her already, and you could end up looking like a tattle-tale at which point YOU would end up looking bad and they may decide to let YOU go instead.
If you know her REALLY WELL and are close friends and you KNOW she will keep the info to herself – by all means let her know so she can be prepared.

@ WOW Would you like it if someone gave you the heads up?
Of cource I would!!! but I wouldn't expect it...I'm trying to think that work is work and friendship is friendship...it's kind of hard....I think i was better off not knowing!!!
You know girl, sometimes just keeping your mouth shut is the best thing.....no te metas en lo que no te debes.....deja que las cosas pasen como tienen que pasar....remember...everything happens for a reason.....
Regardless anything your boss has made his mind up, she's gone. Imagine if your boss finds out that you blew the whisle ...you might be Next, so you better support your boss.
Solo recuerda esto..."De que lloren en mi casa a que lloren en la tuya....."
if i were her I would want to know. Maybe you should give her a heads up so she can be prepared. This is only because it seems that you two are friends if not then maybe i wouldn't say anything.
I just found out that my company is going start to layoff PPL again!! I know for a fact that my co-worker will be let go…here is my question, do you think that I should let her know or should I just keep my mouth shut??? Let me give you a background info…..we have become friends and have lunch together everyday, she has been in this company longer than me but my boss is not happy with her because she has an attitude problem and is not flexible to change.
Hmm, i don't know what i would do. I would like to tell her, but then what if she tells your boss something! Then you can get in trouble for letting her know!! It's a hard call.
