I told you. People would rather read about something scandaolous, sexy or insulting.

Everything else is just boring. Especially statistics. For example the percentage of foro members I think are morons.

I don't believe the complete answer lies in blaming outside forces.

I don't think it's the complete answer either but it's a HUGE part of the answer.  There is hardcore evidence of the CIA involvement in the military coup.  They have in fact admitted to their involvement.  Pinochet as I am sure you know always had a hard time even putting a sentence together he was incapable of heading the military coup!  Richard Nixon was dead set against another socialist goverment and he did everything in his power to get rid of Allende.

I think Neruda is all confused, He probably is the descendent of one of those nazis who entered Chile so many years ago, He has mixed feelings but his genes order Him to look down at those people who don't have germanic roots. Go get a DNA test, you could be related to that Terminator guy.  Just kidding buddy

The wishing of the simple death of Pinochet would not be just. Too many secrets would die with him. If he is ever convicted (of anything) we will never have a consensus on how to punish him.

What is important to find out how everything was possible. It’s too easy to say that it was the Americans and their CIA. Was Chile so fragile a democracy (that second oldest in this hemisphere), so feeble in its sovereignty, that a few millions dollar funneled to the truckers by the CIA was able to topple the government? I don't believe the complete answer lies in blaming outside forces.

Indeed, Pinochet did have help. The help of his fellow chilenos. The ones working close to him and the ones who were furthest away from him. The ones filled with hate toward their neighbour, the ones who were willfully blind to what was going around them.

The machinations of torture and death were systemic in the social and political structure of Chilean society. From those creating policies in the moneda to those executing the orders on the street with their big black boots, the trail of blood runs long.

Certainly, to convict and or execute Pinochet would be a grand symbolic gesture to all those who dared threaten human rights. It would truly signal the return of a hallmark of democracy - an independent judicial system. That would be a celebration in itself.

But can we be sure it won't happen again? No, the execution of Pinochet would absolve all those who worked closely with him. They would breathe a sigh of relief for there would be little political motivation to investigate their role and prosecute them. We must find out more about this structure (and culture?) of compliance. It wasn't merely "following orders".

Pinochet has many secrets - some of which, I believe, shouldn't follow him to the grave.

NERUDA- I don't understand why you bother to come onto this thread and bash everyone!! We all have different views and expressions. Most of the time we come on to just joke around!! I understand you have your own views on certain topics, but why all the negative replies?? I can tell you that i am a very smart woman, who works hard and goes to night school in order to move up in my career!! So if you want, you can PM, cause i'm not one of those stupid latinas that you think!! Just answer my question, cause maybe i missed something on why you are so negative and rude!!

It's the same situation of injustice with crazy men like SADAAM HUSSEIN....
Where was the justice in catching him and giving him a "trial"??
omg that just made me laugh..........it's so pointless!

The damage has been done and no force on hearth can rectify that.....not even by killing these men will the victims ever find peace or UNDERSTANDING of the situation.....

(and people make fun of Fidel? ......hahaha.....pobrecito el Barbudo)

That's right, justice now can be made only up to a certain point.

He is not going to jail even if he is found guilty. The most he'll get is house arrest.

Personally I think justice is being made with every citation to court he gets, with every interrogatory session he has to be in, with every accusation that has been made public, with the charges pressed against his family, with everytime he can't enjoy with his grandchildren, because he has to go see a lawyer or a judge and try to defend himself. Justice is being made with every transcript of his interrogations, where he desperately tries to blame everybody else but him, showing everybody the coward he's always been.

As Chilenita expressed, what would really be justice in thiscase.

I think at least, the recognition of the facts by those, still alive, that comitted them and the minds behind them. I will not bring back the lifes losts but my help others to go on with their lives.

Great question Daeveed but it's a complicated answer!!  I can't say that I am 100% sure of what I would consider justice!

What would justice be?  It's so hard to say I am not sure there is ANYTHING that they could do to him that would "pay back" for all that was done to so many people!!!  Don't get me wrong I would take pleasure in seeing him be tortured and killed in fact I could do it with my bare hands but it would be only ending one pathetic life......they took soooooooooooooooooooo many lives.  He also could have NEVER done what he did without the help of the American goverment and the CIA.....actually NOTHING would have ever happened in CHILE to begin with if it wasn't for them.....NIXON is dead and nobody will go after the CIA sooooooooooo I don't really know what TRUE JUSTICE would be!!! I can tell you that seeing him rot in jail until he dies would at least be something......at least some kind of justice....

As I think about all of this I can't help but remember that Allende himself said in his last speech "la historia los juzgara".....I guess that is true....

Illusions, dreams, friends and family died in 1973 and nothing can change that...
