What's happening in our city is very tragic and sad. Futhermore, what happened to Mario Pereira had hit close to home for me as well...not only did he grow up with my ex boyfriend, he has a 2 year old son, with a good friend of mine....i remember i was with her the day they met eachother. The poor girl is in serious shock, and doesn't know what to tell her son the day he asks about his father. Something definitely has to be done, its getting worse every year.... May God Bless all the families, and rest all the souls of these poor victoms....

It s very sad what is going on in T.O,... I agree that the goverment should have some programs for the kids and parents t help to prevent this issues,.. as Genie said Community Centers activities should be a must ,. or activities after school,. but parents have a big responsability,. i know some of them work more than 10 hrs per day,. but it s quality time what ur child needs,..attention,. soem parents don't even go to school for parents interviews,.. they think that giving them material things is enough when is not,.

Our children are having a lot of influences from other kids,.. we need to teach them to be leaders not followers,.. but to good things,. self-esteem problem has a big role on this,.. We as future parents,. sisters,. brothers,..cousins,.etc,. we need to teach our children and prevent future problems in our community,..

that is true bro...I agree with you on all points. It's not a race issue, it's a culture issue. Parent's are at fault in my eyes for their lack of authority with their kids. The government are at fault because they don't put more community centres and playgrounds and extra curricular activities in troubled neighbourhoods. The troubled youth do this stuff because they need attention.....they should get it.

Ok maybe i did go a step to far calling it a racial issue! Ill give you that i guess its because it just hits too close to home twice!! and what about the Perira brothers Mario died another sad story i knew them thru soccer as well!! i mean the point here is that its getting out of hand! and these Vatos "thugs" know that the police is on strike and are only patrolling certain areas and know whats going.

You know when i was growing up what kept us and my neighboorhood kids out of trouble was our community center we were to busy having tournaments basketball tennis and soccer or Pool we had movie night and swimming competitions that we didnt have time to think "oh who should i shoot for fun??"

Im sorry for the rant and raving but i just think its sad! and now this kid had to pay with his life just because the police "didnt think he was at risk even though he was a witness" come on seriously!!

and cali  im sorry but the day u decide that u want to be a COP U KNOW UR RISK ITS UR DECISION!!! AND FORTY GRAND IS A START RATE THAT MEANS THREE MONTHS LATER UR MAKING WAY MORE!!

CULTURE ISSUE?? I THINK I HAVE AN IDEA ON HAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. PARENTS AND THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD GET INVOLVED WITH THE COMMUNITY TO PREVENT THESE THINGS FROM HAPPENING.

GENIE, SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR LOSS ( OR THAT IT HIT CLOSE TO YOU)

BUT, ITS NOT NECESARILY A RACE THING. BECAUSE I LOST 3 CLOSE PEOPLE ( LATINOS) AND THE POLICE HAVE DONE THEIR JOBS TO FIND OUT WHO THE PERPETRATORS WERE. SO, IT DOESNT MEAN THAT POLICE HATE ON BLACK PEOPLE. IM TIRED OF HEARING THAT BLACK PEOPLE THIS BLACK PEOPLE THAT. THEY'RE NOT THE ONLY VISIBLE MINORITY IN T.O.
IF MAYBE THEY STARTED PUTTING THEIR GUNS AWAY THEN MAYBE THESE THINGS WOULDNT HAPPEN. DONT YOU THINK? BUT THEN YOU'RE GONNA SAY IM AN ASSHOLE FOR SAYING THAT.

EVERYONE HAS GUNS, LATINOS, BLACKS, ASIANS, TAMILS, WHITES, EVERYONE. EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD HAS SOMEONE THAT HAS A GUN, OTHER WEAPONS, OR SELLS DRUGS. SO YOU CANT JUST SAY THAT THE POLICE HAVE DONE NOTHING. BECAUSE, IF YOU WATCH AND READ THE NEWS, POLICE TASK FORCES HAVE MADE ALOT OF RAIDS AND HAVE CONFISCATED DRUGS, WEAPONS AND DIRTY MONEY FORM PEOPLE THAT COULD HAVE COMMITED CRIMES AGAINST EVERYONE IN "HIGH VIOLENCE " NEIGHBORHOODS.

ITS NOT ABOUT BEING BLACK, WHITE, BROWN, RED, PURPLE YELLOW OR GREEN. IT DONT MATTER WHO THE PERSON IS, THE POLICE TAKE EVERY STEP POSSIBLE TO INVESTIGATE ALL THEY CAN TO SOLVE SUCH ATTROCITIES IN UR COMMUNITIES. SO IF Y'ALL MAY, DONT TRY TO PULL THE "ITS CUZ IM BLACK/BROWN/YELLOW/ WATEVER COLOR" OR "DISCRIMINATION" CARD, CUZ Y'ALL KNOW IF A WHITE GUY PULLS A GUN AND KILLS SOMEONE, HE'LL B TRIED IN COURT THE AME WAY A BLACK, LATINO OR ASIAN PERSON WOULD.

BUT YES, ITS SAD TO HEAR THAT ANOTHER INNOCENT PERSON HAS DIED IN OUR CITY. VIOLENCE WONT STOP UNLESS YOU GET THE GUNS AND DRUGS OUT OF THE STREETS. TIL YOU TAKE OUT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM ( THE GUN AND DRUG SUPPLIERS).

AND AS FOR THE POLICE BEING ON STRIKE, 40 GRAND A YEAR ISNT WORTH RISKING YOUR LIFE KNOWING  YOU MAY BE KILLED BY SOME WANNABE THUG, THINKING HE'S 50 CENT OR PANCHO VILLA.

THESE ARE MY 2 CENTS. TAKE EM OR LEAVE EM. AGREE OR DISAGREE, ITS MY OPINION.

I've known 2 guys from my neighbourhood that got killed too. One guy was shot because he "looked" like the guy they were after. I'm sorry but this ghetto fashion thing is going too far. I can put down any money that if they brought back the death sentence, these putos would pussy out to pull a trigger...

Law is too leniant here and so are the parents y mira lo que pasa ahora.

Mourners who’d gathered for the funeral of a young shooting victim are upset police weren’t there to prevent their church from becoming a crime scene, but Chief Bill Blair said there was no reason to believe a shooting would shatter the solemn service.

Detectives are hunting for a suspect after 18-year-old Amon Beckles was shot to death outside the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Albion Road near Martin Grove Friday afternoon.

The young father was attending a funeral for his close friend, 17-year-old Jamal Hemmings, who was gunned down near Eglinton and Oakwood on Nov. 9.

Some of the 300 people who had packed the church to say goodbye to Hemmings have expressed frustration over the fact there were no officers present at the service to ensure safety.

Police said Beckles, who leaves behind an 18-month old daughter, had been in contact with detectives in regards to his friend's death and believed he had no reason to fear for his life.

“There was no indication that he was attending that funeral service or that he was at any risk, otherwise steps would’ve been taken,” Blair explained.

But that answer doesn’t satisfy some people now that another young life is lost.

“I do think police should have been there to protect these other people,” Desiree Winston said. “They’re not doing a very good job.”

Det. Sgt. Mario DiTommaso said the Hemmings and Beckles shootings are connected.

“Amon Beckles was potentially a material witness at the time of the murder of Jamal Michael Hemmings,” he said.

And as police continue their investigation into one of the city’s most shocking shootings, the victim’s family and friends are trying to come to grips with their terrible loss. The victim’s grandmother, Angela Beckles, explained what she’ll miss most about her grandson.

“Unable to hug my grandson and tell him how much I love him and hear him say ‘I love you too, grandma,” she lamented.

And despite the terrible circumstances, Desmond Beckles, the victim’s grandfather, has hope his grandson’s death will serve as an important lesson.

“I hope this experience – that a lot of them will turn their lives around and look to the Lord for guidance,” he said.

Police are searching for a suspect who’s described as:

  • Black, male
  • 19 to 20 years old
  • He was wearing a blue three-quarter length hooded jacket, dark pants and a dark baseball cap

If you have any information that could help police, call (416) 808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
