As video games become more realistic on the screen, new technology seeks to extend that realism off the screen – and your living room might never be the same.

Philips has slated the release of its amBX software for May 2006, with the goal of providing gamers with what they call a “full sensory surround experience.”

In other words, when game enthusiasts buy an amBX-enabled game, and whatever corresponding devices are required, their living room, basement, or wherever they play will be transformed with light, colour, sound, heat, and even airflow to correspond with the game, and whatever level or scene is being played.

For instance, an underwater scene would bathe the room in blue light, while walking through a forest or jungle would make it green. A thunderstorm could trigger white lights to flicker on and off, simulating lightning, while being fired upon would cause heaters to blast.

“For games creators this is a fantastic opportunity: amBX expands the immersive experience by bringing the real world environment into the gameplay,” Jo Cooke, Chief Marketing Officer of Philips amBX, is quoted as saying on the company’s website.

“The creative possibilities, using this technology, for the games industry and beyond are immense.”

The amBX technology has been designed to work with enabled devices like LED colour-controlled lights, active furniture, fans, heaters, audio and video, which are all hooked up together in the user’s room.

It also provides the framework for manufacturers to work on related products, allowing developers and publishers to amBX-enable and enhance their games.

The company behind the revolutionary technology suggests that at some point, players may even be able to produce and share their own experiences online.

At this point, Philips is talking with leading computer games developers and manufacturers regarding adding amBX technology to games and devices. It’s unclear when the software could be used in conjunction with consoles.
