It can take some time for the immune system to produce enough antibodies for the antibody test to detect and this time period can vary from person to person. This time period is commonly referred to as the “window period”. Most people will develop detectable antibodies within 2 to 8 weeks (the average is 25 days). Even so, there is a chance that some individuals will take longer to develop detectable antibodies. Therefore, if the initial negative HIV test was conducted within the first 3 months after possible exposure, repeat testing should be considered >3 months after the exposure occurred to account for the possibility of a false-negative result. 97% will develop antibodies in the first 3 months following the time of their infection. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months to develop antibodies to HIV.   There's also a Anonymous HIV Testing (Women's Clinic) for more info call 416-922-0566.

more-or-less what I thought... I just was not sure how long the window periods were...

USE PROTECTION, PEOPLE!

or alternatively, settle for sex TOYS... lol

Not to down-play the issue or anything, but based on these figures your chances of getting AIDS in Canada are very very slim, no?

I actually thought that the numbers were higher!

My family DOctor included HIV testing in my annual general check up this year, I didn't mind, and yes, it was negative thanks to condoms hahaha.  Sereval years ago I was about to start a relationship with a girl and I thought it was my responsability to get tested, so I went to one of those annonimous test clinics, they gave me a number and told me to come back a few days later, I did and it was negative ( thanks to condoms) , I never gave my name or address, they used the number they gave me before to give me the results.

It is scary but is better to be sure, it is also great to know one is not infected.

This page is filled with stories of people with the virus and people that are scared to get tested. The stories they share in this site are about how they came across that problem or in other words how it all started.  http://www.hivaids.webcentral.com.au/text/stories.html

So, many people might have HIV and still feel perfectly healthy for years not knowing they have the virus. The only way to know for sure if you are infected or not is to be tested.

For your PRIVACY – so that your insurance company don’t find out you getting tested for HCV and jack up your rates, DO IT ANNONYMOUSLY – I think you can do it that at Public Health Labs – LINDAISABELLA?

@LindaIsabella: Are chances of CATCHING HIV THROUGH ORAL not just about the same chances I have of winning the $40 MILLION jackpot on 6/49 tonite? I think that is highly unlikely – but, yes, still possible.
I think there ARE FEMALE Condoms too – right… so to go down on her… one has to lick RUBBER / latex??? EWWWWW… I preffer to take my chances, on the 6/49 that is! LMAO

HIV can get into the bloodstream through the mouth and throat. This is rare. Some people have gotten HIV when they have performed oral sex (given a man a 'blow job' or 'gone down on a women) but it is rare.

I think most of us are AWARE and KNOW it could happent to any of us... it's NOT just a GAY virus anymore (if it EVER was)... main ways of infection: SEX, IVDU, womb (mother to child)... it's all basic info... but I think you are right... not many take the risks seriously and don't use adequate protection... like they used to say, when you get involved (sexually with someone) it's like you're getting sexually involved with that person + all his/her previous partners...

USE A RUBBER!
