Ok no one said that you shouldn't earn your money, but would you like to be humiliated while trying to earn your money.  Would you like to be made fun off while trying to do so.  I just think that asking a person to let's say polish your shoes for one loone may be humiliating for some people, and I don't think that it's fair for someone who has a job to make a homeless person do this, because in a way you are rubbing the fact that they don't have a job and are willing to do anything for money in their face.  I feel that some people are cruel and take pleasure in doing this, and like I said hide the fact that they are selfish and could care less about anybody else but themselves.  What if the homeless person was related to you would you make them do this for a loonie?  Whatever that's you, I won't try to sell you something that you don't want to buy.

So you can give it to the homeless. DUH !!

Honestly, if someone wants to eat, buy food, clothing or booze/drugs, that someone has to freaking earn it. There is always a job for the one that wants to work. No excuses.

Ohhh Buffy there are so many people in this world with such HUGE problems!  It's easy to say homeless people are just lazy but that is not the case.

Right no way of knowing ....so .......instead I assume that there are not too many people out there crazy enough to WANT to live on our freezing cold streets and I give as many handouts as my pocket can afford.

You're absolutelly right, Some of them have had to battle lots of harships in their life and a lot of them are mentally ill. Which is why I suggested they be looked after in some kind of care facility.I have no problem paying taxes for these types of institutions to excist. Again, handing them a loonie is not making them any less ill. As a matter of fact, it probably makes the drug addicted ones more harm then good since at times such an addiction can be so overpowering than they would rather get a fix then food.

So, since there is no way of knowing who's mentally ill, whose addicted to PCP, and who's out there just cause they dont wanna have to punch a clock everyday.. then no handouts for anybody.

If it helps put food in their stomach why is it that everyone (including myself) has offered to buy food and has been asked for the money instead?

ok second question:

Is it fair to compare a homeless person in a poor 3rd world country whose corrupt goverment has bled its resourses to the point where they simply cannot afford to provide as many social programs as... lets say... CANADA, where we give away money like it was virginity on prom night.

3rd Question

Some of these people need a little push to get back on their feet huh?? and God knows Ive been unemployed before and all I needed was for some bleedin heart to give me a loonie to get my ass back in gear... Its amazing what rewarding lazyness will do to a person..

Hey there squeegee kid, shame on you get off the street and find a job ya bum! but here is a loonie for ur troubles.. lord Im so generous... I feel so good about myself now.

Just to clarify, I do agree something needs to be done. I totally agree with Buffy that we need to look at the bigger picture and come up with a global solution in order to help the less fortunate and try to get them off the streets and rehabilitate the ones that can be (some of them are mentally ill and should really be placed in a care facility) the point I am trying to make is.. UR HANDOUTS DO NOT HELP. quit giving these people money it only further encourages them to do nothing to help themselves. If u wanna ease ur sense of guilt everytime someone asks u for some "spare" change (anyone ever find "spare" money on their pay cheque? I know I havent) put the money in a jar and at the end of the year donate it to a worthy cause like the foodbank.

I have mixed opinions on this topic:

First we cant deny that this city does have a problem in regards to the amount of homeless people, its sad honestly. But then again this country has enough resources and opportunities for one to move ahead in life for the most part. Almost anyone can get a job here , if you work alot, you do have at least enough to eat daily.

I lived in Ecuador for a long time, and seeing it from both realities and perspectives. comparing a homeless person there as to the oppose of a homeless person here. theres a big dfference, and this goes for any latin american country there arent the same amount of opportunites there as what we have here, if ur poor back home..its hard for u to leave that cycle..here of ur homeless its possible to work ur way up.

jus my two cents

Like I said before, this is a larger problem and we won't be able to understand it unless we see the bigger picture. We can all pinpoint what is wrong with young individuals who choose to be homeless. I'm not an advocate for it nor do I approve, but I do think that once you lose your dignity, that's pretty much hitting rock bottom. I don't know if these guys are drug addicts, mentally ill or whatnot, but one thing I do know, and that's because I come from a small community. After the nuclear family, the community is the closest thing to having a family. I don't know how many of you have lived in small communities, but we all know the crazy guy, the drunk, the slut, all these different characters that as a community we put up with and let them be, and even tried to help out once in a while. They're part of us and so they do have a feeling of belonging.

In larger societies as this one, the element of familiarity and belonging to a community is lost; we don't feel anything for these people nor do they feel anything for us. We take care of them, maybe, but that's more for our own personal benefit: to make us feel generous and good about ourselves. I know nothing about John the homeless guy, I'll never invite him to my house and maybe I'll give him change, but that's as far as the relationship will ever go. Shelter workers probably feel the same way, and so do the homeless. It's a very cold society and it becomes an issue for governments to deal with, but like all governments, they deal with it in a cold, "official" manner, like they deal with everything else.

Everyone has made some interesting "passionate" points....

Personally, I would help out anyone who I feel is in need.....UNCONDITIONALLY and UN-JUDGEMENTALLY

I even wanna help out people who are stranded on the streets with their broken cars.....LOL

I sometimes have the urge of offering a homeless person "my home"......OR take them to the YMCA
to shower, buy them clothes and food....and even help them get a job........I have done this in the past....with 2 homeless people......taken them to the YMCA....etc.....and it worked for one.....but not the other.....who was an irresponsible person......and even worse....he was "depressed".........

I guess you have to lend out a hand OR be a good judge of character.....

Regardless, if someone doesn't have a simple "luxury" like deodorant (per say).....why not help them.....
why must be always find reasons, excuses, study the scenario, analyze the global issue.....etc.....why not just shut up and donate, and feel good about it......people take too many things for granted......like a simple roof over your head that keeps you safe & warm......

Do your best to help them and let a "higher power" take care of the rest......

ohhhh and screw the government, they can do whatever they want......you as a citizen of this world should take matters into your own hands......

Funny how some of you will send 80 cents to an ethiopian kid and not volunteer your time or donate money to your own people.......

I only give my money to Street Performers... atleast they're providing a service and helping themselves. Although I agree something needs to be done with the homeless (I say send them to Montreal, they'll blend right in there) Giving them money doesnt solve anything. Basically what you are doing is reinforcing the very behaviour you are trying to discourage. And sure they deserve a second chance and all that warm fuzzy stuff but trust me, ur 50 cents do no such thing other them maybe ease some misplaced guilt on your part. If you really wanted to help you would volunteer at a homeless outreach program or something but thats too much work so its easier to just slip Johnny the Bum a loonie.

It's funny how everyone is so quick to judge without even knowing their backgrounds.  I say that we should help them out whether you think they need it or not.  At least your conscience will be clear, and if they are lying about their situation then let that be on them, because they will be delt with in the end, but I think that the majority of homeless people are really homeless, and need help.  It's true that there are many young people who can work, but just because you see that they look healthy or are standing on their feet does not mean that they are ok or able to work.  Sure they can find a job, but they might not have clean clothes to wear to an interview, and knowing how people are these days they wont even want to give them a chance just because of how they look or act.  They can try and get on welfare untill they can find a job, but there are certain requirements that they have to meet in order for them to get money from the government or to get help from other places in general, and some of them might not meet them.  Yes there are resources, but in some cases not for everyone.  I just say that we shouldn't be so fast to judge, because you truly do not know what these people have gone through in their lives, and just like many of us demand respect we should give them respect, because they are human and like the rest of us they are not perfect and deserve a second chance to remake their lives.

I agree with super mario, some of the homeless are young people. It upsets me to see them begging for money when they could be looking for a job instead. It is more upsetting when you know that some of them use the money for drugs, some of them are not even homeless.

Not to long ago there was a lady on the downtown area that was not homeless at all but was begging for money, it turned out that she well off and begging for for money was her job.

I only give my money to those who deserve it, I am not a selfish citizen and do like to give to those who needed.

I agree with buff.

Usually when I see I a homeless person I'll give them some money, but that's only if I have it on me, and when I don't have it on me to give to them I feel real bad, because I wish that I could do something to help them out.  I know many people may call them bums, but we have to realize that not all of them are in their right minds if you know what I mean, and they may not know that there are resources there for them to help them get back on their feet, and some of them might be to proud to get any help.

Let's face it not all shelters are in the best conditions, and some people that work in the shelters may be a$$holes to them.  Regardless if they are homeless by choice or not I believe that we should try and help them out in any way that we can, because what goes around comes around, and one day you might be in need of help, but will not find it for not giving that one person a helping hand.  I think that we as human beings should show compassion for those who are less fortunate then us, and we should not take for granted the precious things in life, because one day you may wake up and it will all be gone.

This is the problem with society these days, because people are just to selfish to think about anybody else but themselves, and I find this to be very, very sad.  I really don't care what anybody says, but anyone who is going to call a homeless person a bum or lazy without knowing their life story or knowing what they have been through is very selfish and is trying to cover that up with dumba$$ excuses, that's all it is pure selfishness no matter what anyone says.

You have to see the bigger picture to understand homelessness. Maybe the shelters are not the best thing for them and they feel safer out on the streets. There are many factors that we, as productive members of our society, and especially as immigrants who have struggled and even made huge sacrifices to be in Canada, won't understand. I don't know what drives them to homelessness but I know I don't fully know what they go through, so I can't judge based on perception. But it is a problem and someone has to do something about it.

Homeless!?
What do you do when you see some of these "homeless" people on the streets (bumbs, they call them) asking for change? do you feel sorry for them?, do you give them some change?, food instead? tell them to "f-off"? or just ignore them? what do you think?
In my view these homeless people have a choice to stay "inside" the shelter, yes it is true! they do not want to follow the institution's rules and in some cases prefer to live on the streets. In others cases some of them get discriminated badly, sometimes abused and forgotten. guys some of these homeless happen to be Hispanic too! what do you think about the situation?

No way they are capable to enrole the work force...No Sympathy for Lazy people...they rather to beg than work...remember the famous Panholder Lady from Baystreet ??? Leather couch Big screeen tv.....No way

I actually offered to buy a hot dog for this guy who asked me for money on Yonge. He said,"why don't you buy me pizza instead?"

I have no sympathy for them.
Once there was this guy on the subway asking for change, he approached me and i told him all i have is food if he wanted it...what did he say to that? " i want money not food biach"...so why should i bother?

and that lady that everyone felt sorry for, that sat in front of the eaton centre to ask for donations?! only to find out that she was better off than most of us here!!

I firmly believe that being homeless/bum is a choice. Canada offers shelters, work and free everything that WE pay for...so really i just look the other way.
