Thanks, guys. As it turns out the .com domain I want is up for sale. The .ca is taken and it doesn't look as though they'll let it go anytime soon. But I do want the .com. The owner's in spain (no, it's not tvbuff.com, although that'd be good too), so should I start negotiating with him? What would you do? Then I'll get someone to build the site for me... it's something simple, maybe blogging, but eventually will try to do more and build it up from there.

are you planning on having a foro too??

If the domain you want is taken why not try a .net? or .org?? or if the site will be local to Canada, try a .ca?
If you really want the .com DON'T contact the owner of the site, just wait until his registration expires and pray he doesn't renew. Contacting a site's owner will make him aware that someone is interested in the domain and won't let it go unless you hand in a huge amount of cash, think about it if you owned drj.com and I wanted to buy it from you, would you sell it to me for 10 dollars?? The final price will depend on the domain.

godaddy.com charges $US 8 for a .com, .net, or .org
netfirms.ca will charge $CND 10/year for a .ca, (cheapest place for .cas and they give you their basic hosting for free).

The price you pay for the doman is just the domain the www.tvbuff.com
you need to host you website on a web server , you have to pay for it. There is companies that do all in one.

For a basic site prices would be around $7.95 a month. And yeah, some hosting companies do the domain registration and the hosting.

Hey guys, how do you register the name of a website. How much does it cost? Who do I have to contact to do this? Also, the name I wanted wasn't taken last time I checked, but now it is. Should I wait until it becomes available again (if) or should I come up with a new one? Help !!!

Hey Buff this is really easy to do, the best thing is to first check if the damain name is taken, if not then you can buy it from many places one of the cheapes is yahoo.com i think they charge you $19 for two years.

Hope this was helpfull. Take care.

There is different companies that offer those services, you can try domainbank, tucows. You can do it online using a Credit Card. Prices vary from one provider to another one also the kind of domain you want, .Ca, .COM, etc , etc. If the domain is taken yes you have to wait, Unless u really need it you have to offer some $$ to the owner, But if you wanna play nasty you can snap the domain but again you have to wait.
I'd like to talk to them first, 'cause their is like a one-page info thingy, but if not, how do I snap it? Somebody at work also suggested dot.ca. How do I compare? What am looking for here? size? price? time?

Snap it is a sneaky way to take over the domain, you get involved on a Bid and depending how much money the owner is willing to pay to keep his/her domain. Take a look to https://www.snapnames.com/

I think .CA's are more expensive than .COM , depending who you buy it from. Also the price is based on how many years you want the domain 1, 3, 7 years. Take a look to www.cira.ca
