Are guys ready for the male birth-control pill?

As part of the social and political changes ushered in during the 1960s, the decade promised a new era of sexual freedom.

The pill allowed women to control their child-bearing destinies easily, cheaply, effectively and with relatively few side effects. As this predated AIDS, the door was opened for a virtual sexual free-for-all.

For men, female oral contraceptives were a godsend. After a quick discussion about whether one's partner was on the pill, it was game time. Condoms, you ask? Who used condoms?

Of course the 1980s changed all of that, and men once again had to take greater responsibility for their sexual well-being.

But soon guys worldwide will be given another option — a male version of the pill.

Various pharmaceutical companies around the world are currently developing drugs that in some way inhibit the male body's ability to produce or deliver sperm, and many are close to achieving that goal.

A few kinks have to be ironed out, namely, how to make the drugs as effective as existing contraceptives without causing significant hormonal changes and — probably the biggest concern for most men — how to ensure the effects are only temporary.

Although the new pill would not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, it will eventually be possible for monogamous partners, pre-screened for STDs, to use a male birth control pill as their sole means of contraception.

The X-factor in all of this is the male willingness to take the pill. According to a multi-national study conducted in 2000 by the U.K.-based Contraceptive Development Network, two-thirds of men polled said they would be willing to take such a drug.

Not surprisingly, 80 per cent of women said they would welcome the male pill and only 2 per cent said they would have trust issues surrounding its proper use.

For a Canadian perspective, I contacted Jamie Slater, communications officer for Planned Parenthood Toronto, who told me he would pass me along to one of his specialists if any had done significant research into the issue. They haven't, mainly because male oral contraceptives have yet to face Health Canada scrutiny and, more importantly, because the men of Toronto have thus far shown no interest in this new version of the pill.

Perhaps when the drugs are approved by governments around the world, the media jumps on the oral contraceptive bandwagon and a sports star like Tiger Woods brags on TV about how he's taken the birth control reins in his marriage, men will stand up and take notice.

Call it a gut feeling, but I suspect many of us will have a tough time swallowing a pill that stops our boys from swimming. Or maybe I'm wrong and the times are indeed changing.

To all of our male readers, e-mail me and let me know if you would be willing to take an oral contraceptive, assuming it was inexpensive, safe and relatively free of side effects.

But I also want to know whether women would trust their men to actually take the pill each morning. I'll discuss the findings of this not-even-remotely-scientific poll in the next instalment of A Guy Thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all Genie was ask for personal hands on experience on this subject....to try and get a feel for what most women are using now in days....I'm sure many of us have learned from this and now we can approach our Doctor with some questions that might help our situation.....all we're doing on this thread is communicating....MEN are welcome for in order to control birth, they also need to TAPAR their lil'man....LOL

Genie, is cool when you want advise from us foro ladies when it comes down to things like, fashion, food, places to eat, touring, dancing..etc. But talking about "BIRTH CONTROL". none uf are experts in the field, and i'm sure a REAL DOCTOR can help out on this one. But instead you choose to ask a foro. (which is ok, i mean. you always start THREADS LIKE "i need your help "on wat ever stuff you wan to know and such)

That's the one I use, but I get these horrible (and I mean really, really horrible) headaches, that I've been meaning to change, but I've also heard horror stories about the patch. I need to do more research.

I guess the best methods are abstinence and chastity belts.

i would suggest tri-cycline it actually is good for getting rid of acne but in anycase different ones work for different people...carry it in your wallet and set your cell phone alarm for the time you want to take it everyday and you'll never forget....worse case scenerio you can go for plan B. hope that helps
