This will end the day more latinos get involved in the process of MAKING movies, of writing them, of producing them. The fact that most directors/writers/producers are white has a lot to do on how latinos and other cultures are portrayed in cinema. It's pure ignorance. They depict them exactly as they see them. That's why, like it or not, J.Lo has conquered so many frontiers, 'cause you don't see her being the usual Latina, and she and others like her (Rita Moreno, Edward James Olmos, the guy in Law & Order) and so many other actors are paving the way for others to start getting involved in the medium. Once this happens two things might occur: either these new people assimilate the formulaic way Hollywood does movies or they bring something new to the table; something like The Motorcycle Diaries. Personally I think Indies are the way to go, because you're allowed to tell the story you want to tell without compromising a big budget. But yeah, I definitly think more people need to get involved in the moviemaking business.

You should watch movies like Real Women Have Curves, that depict the Latin culture in a different light. There's a couple others, but I can't remember right now.

Havent seen the movie... Tell us more about what its about. In regards to Latinos always being portrayed as criminals or gang bangers.... unfortunately its the brush that white society or the media has painted us with.  Its very very few and far between the movies that actually show latinos as being hard working caring individuals.  I can only think of two movies right now that come to mind; one being "Crash" where the latino is displayed as a hard working family man who tries to go against the stereotypical norm of what a young 'thug looking' homie is.  Second, I forget what its called but its about the Latino teacher who pushes his students to exceed standards on their school test, and the result is that the board thinks that they all cheated b/c they did so well. Damn it! I wish I remembered the movies name. But anyways, they protrayed the teacher (he plays Selena's dad in the movie with JLo) as a hard working teacher who pushes his pupils to strive for excellence and with his help and guidance, they achieve it and learn to overcome other life obsticles.  Its really quite good.Unfortunately, those are the only two examples that I can think of that portray latinos in a positive light, whereas I can name you hundreds of movie examples where they are made out to be the 'bad guys'.

I think the movie was "Stand and Deliver" and the actor is Edward James Olmos
