WAYOVÉ: Named for an Afro-Colombian term meaning "is going to rain", WAYOVÉ is the latest exponent of a dynamic and burgeoning Colombian musical and cultural scene that combines deep folkloric roots with the more aggressive sounds of son, salsa, jazz, timba, blues, rock and champeta.
WAYOVÉ formed four years ago in Caribbean coastal city of Cartagena˜one of the hubs of Colombia's cultural scene. The 9-member band employs traditional instruments such as the Indigenous gaita(bamboo flute) and Afro-Colombian tambor alegre (drum), as well as, a full horn section, drums, keyboards, bass and electric guitar. WAYOVÉ‚s performance will open with a set of traditional Caribbean coast Afro-Colombian music and will follow with the full band playing original compositions.
All funds raised will support the CASA‚s ongoing solidarity work with Colombia's grassroots social movements and an upcoming trade union education tour that will take place in Sept/Oct 2005.
