Well,your American friend forgot to tell you that they supported a long war in El Salvador, no wonder people are afraid to show off signs of wealth or they are assaulted by unemployed ex -soldiers,etc.

 In Ecuador there hasn't been a war, and yet the situation is bad.  My ecua friends tell me about their families struggles to live with such a low salary, in fact,entire towns populations are trying to emmigrate to Spain and other countries, many of them pass by central america and don't look like europeans.  They tell me the country is beautiful but politicians ruin it with their corruption.  So if you feel better by thinking you some how are from a rich country I'll ask you: "What are you doing so far away from such a beautiful paradise?", Does dressing the way you do make you feel European or something and better tham enybody else?. perhaps you have a complex and feel "realizado" by comparing to other latinos.  By the way, even some young canadians wear those baggy jeans in Toronto, just visit Markham Road in Scarborough.

 I have plenty of ecua friends and they tell me about beautiful ecuador.  I hope somedays they get real presidents and honest politicians:otherwise, people will continue to leave and make room for colombians,etc.  God help Latin America.

I dont walk around with a 22, i asked if me smoking weed makes ghetto, if wearin baggy clothes makes me any different than you, if i quoted the wrong person ma bad, but im jus addin ma 2 cents,  only cuz i wasnt raised the same way as you doesnt make me less of a decent person. and the name latinos derrives from the mix of Taino indios and Spaniards soldiers.

I think Toronto does have a big amount of thugs & ghetto looking people (which is not my thing) but we also defenitly have a big amount of Nice looking Latins, so we can't generalize.

 IF you go to central america you'll see that in some areas people dress like thugs, but most people wear casual and dressing clothes, otherwise nobody get jobs.  If you go to any bank branch in San Salvador you'll see how men and women dress, they dress professionally and accordingly to their jobs; they look much better and treat you better than any bank branch here.  Overthere I used to iron my clothes everyday and shine my black shoes, otherwise I wasn't accepted inside my public high school.  Of course there are guys that wear ghetto looking clothes; but, you'll be surprissed that what you are stating doesn't not apply to most people. In fact, most women are femenine and wear dressing clothing,since as I said, no one gives you a job if you do otherwise.  Here in Toronto I've seen many youth wearing those clothes which I think don't represent most latin american styles, it is more african american and Southern USA mexican- american clothing.  I wrote once here that latin women should dress accordingly to their age and avoid clothing which makes them look bad since I've observed this.

So, lets be cool, and try to get along.  Don't generalize; don't try to put other latinos down.  Remember, there are white collar thugs who dress professionally and cause more damage to the community such as drug dealers ,and bad lawyers.

Thats all well and good and all... but the reason why we are called Latinos is because our language is derived from Latin, technically Latino is short for Latinoamericano to differenciate us from say the italian or french speakers which also derive from Latin. Incidently, the reason why we are called indios its cause Columbus got lost and thought he had landed in India instead of the Antilles.

I'm in Santiago Chile right now and I've seen a few wannabe thugs.... actually, the real ones can't affort the big clothes, sneakers, and the hat tilted to the side, but the real thugs here are more dangerous than the wannabes that dress like that and act badass. 

My guess is that hiphop music/culture has a bigger influence over the people in north america and thats why you get alotta thuggedout people from many cultures...blacks, whites, latinos, indians,..etc.   Over here in Chile no one really listens to it and thats why most people dress differently and have there own style.

But yeah i agree that there is somekind of ghetto latin scene in T.O, but as you go more toward the suburbs latinos are there, but blend in with the italians, porkchops, arabs,  europeans..etc... if you don't hear them speak or theres no flag sticker on their car, theres no way you'll be able to tell their background.

ahhh one thing taht crossed my mind...

what would T.O (the GTA) be like if seeing a latino (on the street/mall/school) was as common as seeing an oriental, or an east indian??...jajajajaja.. that would be sweet
