they have a technologies called naked DSL which allows them to use the dead bell line for their connection requirements.

it has all the bells and whistles, Call Waiting, call Forwarding, Caller ID, Do not Disturb etc.

no 911 if there is a power outage, easily fixed with a ups.

Regarding long distance calls, I have found this GTA base company ( valucall.net)

has the best rates around even thouhg its not a voip provider, it beats alot of

international voip rates. I compared the rates of Vonage to this company and clearly

Valucall.net come out winning. To use it, you got to dial 10-10-967 before the number your

calling. The quality is great, no worries about drop calls, no worries if the internet network will

go down when talking. YOu get charged for only what ever time you have talked for, and the charge appears on your Bell bill.

well any provider will give you free calls to another customer anywhere in the world, and they all give you the free adapter, except for the canadian companies that dont have the competition face to face...i had my adapter in San Salvador the whole christmas and people was calling me as if i was back at work..i also call someone in san salvador for free all the time since we both usin the same company...

If you think Primus is cheap...I got a better deal. How would you like to call anywhere in world for free using the flyfone system. The flyfone system has an advantage because it works on dial up and high speed. Ive had it for roughly 3 months now and I have to say after the initial problems I had getting it stable its been great. Half the time people dont even know its not a regular land line plus like LVacan said its so much cheaper and u get so many more features.

Im still using Primus as a service provider and I pay about 35/mo for unlimited LD to Canada and the US all the fetures plus 2 numbers.

i used broadvoxdirect and i pay $19 a month but it went up t0 29 a month, good service and free adaptor as well , a lot cheaper thanvonage, i was one othe first to sue their service when they had their 19 a month offer

I being using VOIP since last year. the call quality is really good. the pro's are that you can all the features that Bell Canada would charge you like $25 and up, you can get for free, call display, call waitin, 3 way, call forward, the beauty u can forward any wehre in Canada and USA for free, and you can also carry your phone anywehre as long as u have high speed internet. I took it down to San Salvador in December and i was anwering my calls like if i was here...
u have to rely on good internet connection , otherwisze the call can get choppy, and as far as havin multiple lines, that becomes a challenge, you have to kind of wire your whole house if u want all phones sharin the line....

@ Buzz: Dont worry about the q's thats the whole point of the thread. U can take the gateway around to any broadband connection in the world but you have to set custom it to each IP via a the browser portal. it detects the IP automatically so the procedure is fairly quick and easy.

The bussy line is that on local or Long distance calls? do you know if you can carry the box with you to any internet connection? sorry to ask all of this questions? is the phone number based on an IP address? hummm I gotta get one of this things so I can ask all this question to their support group

So I got the gateway yesterday and Ive been using it since then. So far I have to say the sound quality is excellent. I would say comparable to a good cellphone reception. Even with 2 computers sharing the broadband connection and my wireless router hooked up to the same you can still get calls in. There seems to be a problem with network busies on out calls specially during peak hours, I've had to dial a couple of times to get a line out other than that incoming calls always seem to come in.

Im gonna keep testin it out and post my findings as they come...

Thanks for the replies everybody, so many views but I guess no one has actually bought into this yet cause there are very little replies.

@ DR J, I looked at Vonage but they are more expensive, almost double actually so I decided to try Primus see how it goes, the other 2 I didnt like the idea of making all the calls via my PC. The 911 thing doesnt bother me cause I use my celly for local calls.

@phantasma: I'd go with Vonage instead, they've been in the VOIP business longer. As Xavier said the main issue is your network speed, otherwise the call signal would be weak. if you've ever called an overseas cell phone from your cell phone, you'd know what I'm talking about. Oh, and there's no 911. If the only thing you're looking for is cheap long distance, I'd consider skype out, net2phone or similar companies

@buzzlightyear: phone connects to a 'box' that's given to you by the company, this box connects to your internet modem. My guess is you can use a splitter to connect several phones.

Hey Guys if you do or if someone has this....how do you share the line? if you have multiple phones in your house? and how much is each phone? can you use your current phone?

I haven't used it but a friend has it, the only con i can think of is the fact that u have to rely on the nework of ur internet provider to be up at all times and we all know how that is. One pro that i can think of is the fact that u can take the moden to anywhere in the world where they have high speed internet access and u can hook it up and use it as if u r making local calls. Anyways, let us know how it goes because I'm thinking of doing the same.

I am considering ordering VOIP service from Primus Canada as a cheap long distance alternative ($29 for unlimited local and long distance calling in Canada/US) Plus they throw in Call display and all that stuff. Does anyone here use the service that can tell me what they think of it or can suggest other companies that offer a similar (ie CHEAPER) deal.
