Fido is the best option at the moment unless you don't use your cellie often, get a plan with Bell mobility. I consider rogers a rip off and Telus is more for business people.

For your sake, I hope you work for a cell phone company... or you're a serious cell phone geek...
Thanks so much for the info... I'll be sure to check out the comparison site... it's always good to compare options before you buy... I always do that... for certain items, of course.

Here is the deal, Pay as you go is only for extreme minimal usage (less than one SHORT call per day) I would recommend going with a minimal monthly plan since it gives u a much cheaper per minute rate ($20/mo for 200 minutes works out to .10/min as opposed to the .30/min u wld be paying on average on PAYG) Not only that its more convenient than having to constantly buy cards and punch in numbers and risk running out of minutes when u most need them which kills the primary reason for owning a cell phone, convenience.
If you dont want to sign a contract every carrier offers a NO contract price for any of the handsets and will allow you to sign on to a monthly plan without a term. If you want a free phone thats where the contract is mandatory.
About buying an unlocked phone on eBay, I would not recommend that for casual users since a) u will get no warranty for your phone so if anything happens to it u are SOL and b) since you didnt get it from the carrier you wont get any handset specific help from them either e.g. do you need to know how to lock your keys? dont ask us, we dont carry that model!
A bit of clarification about unlocking phones: You can only unlock GSM phones, that means if you buy an unlocked phone from eBay you still can only use it on a GSM carrier which in Ontario that pretty much means Rogers or now-owned-by-Rogers Fido. Even if the phone is unlocked it still does not guarantee it will work on Rogers (or Fido-Rogers) as some international phones work on different frequencies than North American Carriers)
If you do wanna sign a contract, most carriers offer you unlimited local calling for x months (even on a 1yr contract u get atleast 2 months) so that will help you determine your calling pattern and the amount of minutes you will need going forward.
Check out www.comparecellular.ca for specific pricing on all carriers and let me know if you have any q's

what? you found Manuel Noreaga? In the Phillipines? He has a mansion? Ok, we on it, on it, right now!
Fido has a plan where it is $45 unlimited... if you talk a lot i think that will really help you.. i believe they also have a $30 plan were its unlimited incoming calls and evenings and weekends free starrting at 5pm... thats not too bad...
I wouldn't recommend a prepaid plan unless you were sure you were going to talk less than 30 minutes a month. On plans, if you care about quality go with Bell, but if you care about price go with Fido or Telus
"
yeah I'm with DR_J and remember always ask as many questions as u can before u sing any contracts.

FIND OUT WITH FIDO IF ITS IN UR AREA AND DO THE HOME TO CELL PLAN!!!

yep but not all carriers use the same technology, so if you bring an unlocked GSM (rogers or fido) phone to bell or telus, they won't be able to active it for you "

I'm in the process of getting a new cell phone and trying to find the best plan, and I'm too lazy to do the research right now. What do you guys think? Which is the best phone/company? What would be the best plan for someone who's not a big talker? Any suggestions?
