I guess I was lucky enough to be part of an educational system in transition, where I was learning about Che AT school, outside, and everywhere. And his picture was all over the place too... Argentina? I can see why it wouldn't be convenient, politically and otherwise, to teach about Che.

I've also read A Sunday at a Pool, and although the story was gripping, there's something about the author that just didn't grab me. Maybe because I read it in English and he originally wrote it in French. Of Julia Alvarez I've read In the Name of Salome and How the Garcia Girls lost their Accents and they were both EXCELLENT. She's an incredible writer. I'll make sure I read the one you recommend.

Al que ingrato me deja busco amante;
y al que amante me sigue dejo ingrata;
constante adoro a quién mi amor maltrata;
maltrato a quién mi amor busca constante.

Al que trato de amor hallo diamante;
y soy diamante al que de amor me trata;
triunfante quiero ver al que me mata;

Si a éste pago, padece mi deseo;
si ruego a áquel, mi pundonor enojo;
de entre ambos modos infeliz me veo.

Pero yo por mejor partido escojo;
de quién no quiero ser violento empleo;

The Da Vinci code is a great book....there's a couple of TV documentaries based on that book, you might wanna watch them after you've finished the book.

I LOOOOOVE Mystery books. I think that's even better than watching a movie. I've read a lot of Agathat Christie, but to tell you the truth, I'll read anything that falls into my hands, and so some of them were really, really good, but I don't remember the names. I still have to read Grisham. That's on my To Do list for this year.

But this one from Benedetti is Da Bomb !

Táctica y estrategia
Mi táctica es
mirarte
aprender como sos
quererte como sos.

Mi táctica es
hablarte
y escucharte
construir con palabras
un puente indestructible.

Mi táctica es
quedarme en tu recuerdo
no sé cómo ni sé
con qué pretexto
pero quedarme en vos.

Mi táctica es
ser franco
y saber que sos franca
y que no nos vendamos
simulacros
para que entre los dos

no haya telón
ni abismos.

Mi estrategia es
en cambio
más profunda y más
simple.

Mi estrategia es
que un día cualquiera
no sé cómo ni sé
con qué pretexto
por fin me necesites.

This is my Number one.... Sabines

no encuentran, buscan.

siempre, hacia alguna parte.
Esperan,

temblorosos, hambrientos,
a cazar fantasmas.

complacidas,

My favourite, Neruda's Poema No. 20

I have; I've read Daughter of Fortune, Eva Luna, Portrait in Sepia, and I find her brilliant. Of all these, I think I liked Portrait in Sepia the most. I'm still in shock with the husband and his sister in law's story.

Okay, so I'm a geek. I like books.

What are your all time favourites? Both Spanish and English. I've personally read so many that I don't have a favourite, per se, but I did like The Red Tent a lot-- very good in strengthening the female bond. I highly recommend it. I also liked She's come Undone a lot. I couldn't get over the fact that it was a man writing as a teenage girl. I recently read The Da Vinci Code and that's a must read-- for everyone.
Spanish books: Cien años de Soledad, of course, but I also liked La Casa de los Espiritus (in fact, I read both the same week and I liked Isabel Allende's better.) I also enjoyed Sofia de los Presagios a lot. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any right now.

Any other nerds out there? What would recommend?
