I've always let the person know way in advance so really when you break up with them it's not a surprise.
So you'd say in advance: "hun, in about 3 months, I am gonna dump you!"?
No of course not but when things don't go well both parties usually feel it and discussion usually comes up. Unless you are clueless one knows when you're on the verge of splitting.

I think it's better in person, although not the fastest.
But think about it, you send a text, they text back, then they call, they may show up at your house and it makes that process that much longer then if you would have just met up with them, told them in their face, and done.
