His name is Grgo Kutlesa and he's wanted for a frightening crime that could have happened to anyone. Police allege the 42-year-old is the man who deliberately pushed a passenger onto the subway tracks at the College station on May 21st.
You can't forget the story. The commuter, a 46-year-old man using the system first thing at 6am that day, was simply waiting for a train to come when he was shoved from behind and landed squarely on the tracks, narrowly missing a deadly electric shock.
Cops admit he was lucky. "He came inches away from the third rail. As a result, he managed to safely climb back onto the platform," P.C. Tony Vella revealed that day. "The suspect fled the scene."
Authorities believe he was a homeless man but that he didn't get away in the confusion without leaving the most important clue behind - his visage on TTC security video. Detectives spent the past two weeks analyzing that grainy footage and were finally able to come up with Kutlesa as their main suspect after studying the pictures and fielding calls to Crime Stoppers.
They know who he is, but not where he went. The last known sighting of the suspect was in the Yonge and College area. But he could be anywhere right now.
Police tell CityNews.ca the suspect is well known to them and that he's been accused of assaulting strangers before. But because of what Det. Frank Giancola calls his ongoing "disturbed mental state," he keeps being found not fit to stand trial and let out again, only to allegedly re-offend.
Kutlesa is known to hang out in the downtown core and Giancola has a special alert to those who use public transit there: he apparently has a history of attacking people on the TTC. Cops say he gets onto the subway by literally pushing his way through at stations without paying and isn't stopped by TTC personnel, who may fear for their own safety.
What will happen if they catch him? Giancola isn't optimistic. He says in the past he's been held for several 30-day assessments and when doctors don't find anything wrong with him, he's released, potentially winding up back on public transit.
Kutlesa is described as:
White,
5'9",
170 lbs.,
Shaggy brown hair,
Brown eyes.
But the best clue is something he may not be able to hide - a huge scar on his forehead.
Cops are ready to charge him with aggravated assault once they find him. And they're hoping you'll keep a wary eye out for him on the streets.
But if you do spot him, keep your distance - police say Kutlesa could be a danger to the public and they don't want anyone to approach him.
