I always thought the expression "experiencia castradora" came from "castrar" (i guess Buffy was close blankstare.gif). As in an "unbearable experience". O sentirse anulado, una sensacion de impotencia. Algo asi

Is not bad at all, I know I sound very extremist at times, is the way I express, but it's actually quite good, is very convenient and I have a lot of freedom and I'm involved in interesting projects... but it's the quietness and parsimony in the air....kind of the anxious you can have at  your dentist office waiting room...

jaja castradora from the word Castro, as Fidel....(I wonder if that's where the word comes from..)
when you want to do things in a different way that the system in place won't allow you, but could make things better for without affecting the outcome...

your (ballbreaking) hinchapelotas traduction would be rather extremist

Why I was worried is that normally I'm very outgoing and now I'm avoiding people so I don't have to talk...

I guess FORO would be a good place to pick up ideas...

Municipal, provincial or federal?

I'm in a similar scenario with lots of women... give it a few months and when you get closer and they get bolder you'll start learning everything from make up and fashion to PMS, Midol and Aunt Flow! blankstare

I'd say just learn to be a good listener and voila! You've won them all. I heard that working for the government is boring as hell... is that true? Whenever I had to go to a gov. office, they all look so miserable and the whole enviroment looks and even smells of boredom...

LOL.  Ya, i can see how bringing up topics that they speak about on the EDGE would not be appropriate.  Those guys make me laughbiggrin  I agree with everyone's comments.  I guess try to keep up on current events.  Im sure some confianza will happen in a little while and the conversations may be a bit more interesting.

If there are not many "outside" topics... bring up "inside" the work stuff. I.E.:

  • Did you hear about the new project that they are giving Mr. X?
  • That new secretary seems smart (you mean HOT really!
Or just about random stuff:

  • How about those Leafs playing golf
  • Jays' season start
  • I'm going to NYC in a few days
  • Those iPhones are popular, eh
  • TV shows - Damn that last show of The Moment of Truth... marriage breakers!
As a last resort, make up stuff:
  • I'm thinking about adopting (a new lifestyle, not necesrily a kid...lol)
  • My date last nite was great
  • Courses I'm thinking of taking
How about telling them some jokes and start with: "kock, knock" giggle.gif

I try to read the paper in the morning or look at what is going on around the world on the net and talk about that, but most of the time we talk about houses and how to fix things around the house. shrug.gif

Oh I can totally relate to this!  When I first started working here years ago I was much younger than everyone in this office and finding common ground was hard.  I learned how to ask them about things I didn't really care about...how are your kids?  How was your weekend?  I think being fake in the corporate world is an absolute MUST!!!  Knowing your current events is a good way of sparking up conversation as well.

How do you fill out those ackward silence moments at  work, with colleagues and other people that you don't have anything in common?

I have felt bad lately,  cause all that people can think of is talking about the weather and that's something I couldn't care less...and my face expression don't hide it....and I don't think they would be impressed of hearing about my parties during weedends

What other topics do you guys use to create rapport at the office? specially when it's a much mature crowd...any suggestions?
