I always thought the expression "experiencia castradora" came from "castrar" (i guess Buffy was close ). As in an "unbearable experience". O sentirse anulado, una sensacion de impotencia. Algo asi

Is not bad at all, I know I sound very extremist at times, is the way I express, but it's actually quite good, is very convenient and I have a lot of freedom and I'm involved in interesting projects... but it's the quietness and parsimony in the air....kind of the anxious you can have at your dentist office waiting room...
jaja castradora from the word Castro, as Fidel....(I wonder if that's where the word comes from..) when you want to do things in a different way that the system in place won't allow you, but could make things better for without affecting the outcome...
your (ballbreaking) hinchapelotas traduction would be rather extremist

Just enjoy the paycheque.

Why I was worried is that normally I'm very outgoing and now I'm avoiding people so I don't have to talk...
I guess FORO would be a good place to pick up ideas...

I'm in a similar scenario with lots of women... give it a few months and when you get closer and they get bolder you'll start learning everything from make up and fashion to PMS, Midol and Aunt Flow!

It has been less than two months since I started, I came from being in a Manufacturing environment, where I could find a lot of guys from young to old with different backgrounds, so there was a lot of things to talk about (covering from all the soccer leagues around the world to places, politics and life) but now I work with the guverment, in an environment where 85% of staff are women in their 30's or up ...and their lifestyle is more family oriented and around their house..and everyone is nice....but I haven't follow much of the local news lately...and all I have to keep updated is with what I heard at The Edge....so a lot of times my comments are out of place, and it's hard when you are expose to them so much ime during the day... I guess my learning curve around those formal topics will be big....but I'll try to fake and roll play to see how that goes...[I'm just afraid that type of behaviour leads me premature baldness, wrinkles and early envejecimiento]
It's good to hear that I'm not the only one...But I will make sure to pick up the news on my way to work from now on
I'd say just learn to be a good listener and voila! You've won them all. I heard that working for the government is boring as hell... is that true? Whenever I had to go to a gov. office, they all look so miserable and the whole enviroment looks and even smells of boredom...

LOL. Ya, i can see how bringing up topics that they speak about on the EDGE would not be appropriate. Those guys make me laugh I agree with everyone's comments. I guess try to keep up on current events. Im sure some confianza will happen in a little while and the conversations may be a bit more interesting.

I try to read the paper in the morning or look at what is going on around the world on the net and talk about that, but most of the time we talk about houses and how to fix things around the house.
if it doesn't come naturally you probably just don't have a lot of common interests. Nothing you can do about that... you'd probably feel even more awkward forcing it. I take it it's a relatively new job? I'm sure eventually you'll find common topics
you totally have to force it

Oh I can totally relate to this! When I first started working here years ago I was much younger than everyone in this office and finding common ground was hard. I learned how to ask them about things I didn't really care about...how are your kids? How was your weekend? I think being fake in the corporate world is an absolute MUST!!! Knowing your current events is a good way of sparking up conversation as well.

How do you fill out those ackward silence moments at work, with colleagues and other people that you don't have anything in common?
I have felt bad lately, cause all that people can think of is talking about the weather and that's something I couldn't care less...and my face expression don't hide it....and I don't think they would be impressed of hearing about my parties during weedends
What other topics do you guys use to create rapport at the office? specially when it's a much mature crowd...any suggestions?
