Oh puhhhleeeease! You want me to give you examples of over achieving athletes that DIDN'T have their parents push them?? I don't buy your argument at all. I don't believe in PUSHING your kid at anything (exposing them, yes. Pushing them, no) You realize the pressure that puts on a young child?
I think there are far more benefits in letting one's kid express themselves at the level that THEY feel comfortable, than at whatever level YOU think is comfortable for THEM . There are many things to keep kids out of trouble that aren't sports (if that were your main concern) Sports is sure one of them, but they don't have to turn pro to benefit from it. Simply playing it, is more than enough (to me, anyway)
And as I was saying, there are far FAR FAARRR more success stories of athletes that became as successful as they have, without their parents having to "push them to excel". I think that parents that do that, have their own agenda to fulfill. Either financial or egocentric (See crazy soccer/hockey parents)
I think it's totally selfish to rob your kid of a normal childhood or the childhood with hobbies/sports that THEY prefer (as opposed to yours), to feed one's ego or one's unfulfilled dreams. Unless, of course, your kid totally loves what he/she's doing and doing it of his own will, and at his own pace
So there

Reminds me of Michael Jackson. Lots of $$ but No childhood and a pretty messed up adult life.

BTW... there are sooooo many leagues, why would you want to start another one! Like Chilenita said... you better have lots and LOTS of time
My brother coaches a rep team and they practice twice a week right now. IT'S NOT EVEN ANYWHERE NEAR the start of the season. In the summer they practice twice a week and play twice a week. If there is a tournament it's soccer ALL weekend. All this and the it's a 9 yr old girl rep team.
TONS of work.
Wow, that's a lot BUT i do know people that spend 4 days a week taking their kid to soccer. Right now, i'm only spending once a week at soccer. The league i have my son in sucks big time. They don't believe in having practices. They just throw the kids on the field and expect them to learn that way. I just changed leagues and he will be playing for another league for the summer. Luckily they practice and play during the week and we have the weekends free.
See but if you want your son to actually be really good you MUST get him into rep soccer. Rep soccer is where the much better players are. Much more competitive and much more organized.
Otra crazed soccer mom in the making
Tiger woods became who he is because of his fathers drive to make him an excellent player. Serena and whatshername Williams...same thing. Bottom line is you will never be an above average soccer player if you are playing house league. There are many benifits to pushing your child to excel in a sport. It keeps them out of trouble when they hit the teens and could potentially pay for their education.
So there

Isn't your boy like really really small? What is this practice thing for a 5 or 6 year old? I think it makes perfect sense to just let them play, as opposed to drag the kid four times a week to play a game where he's supposed to play to just have a good time, not to play as a six year old pro, and not necesarily to win I see a crazed soccer mom brewing.... no offence
It's true about letting them on the field to just play BUT my son wants to learn. He sees my brother and other family members and he wants to play just like them. If he wants that, he's definately not going to learn in the league that he's in right now. I also don't want him in some REP league, at least for another few years. He's only 5 years old. I just want him to learn how to handle the soccer ball. He doesn't do any of that right now. He just runs and kicks the ball when it gets close to him :shrugs: When his team loses he knows that it's ok and i'm not and NEVER will be some crazy soccer mom. Whether he wins or lose, thats ok with me, as long as he has fun.

I don't know where you live but in certain areas securing the fields may be a challenge. If the municipality governs the use of soccer fields, be sure that you should book them well in advance, as early as the winter before the summer season. The other option is to book with someone that offers private fields for rent.
Hey Buffy contact the OSL - Ontario Soccer Association http://www.soccer.on.ca/ thats if you want them to compete with other legues and stuff! If what you looking to do is a house league either way you need to get Refs that are trained and those you can find at http://www.drcdurham.ca/ thats for the Durham area or go to http://www.eodsa.on.ca/
Also get in touch with parents and tell them you ideas or you can just go to the Catholic School near you or public and rent out the gym for a fee then you can start with a few teams and move forward from there
it is alot of work and u can practically kiss ur weekends goodbye!!! especailly summer time camping! forget it!
but theres some help and most answers are there! btw u can even get the hubby to become a ref for you he just has to pass the course
Genie, this is great info.
Just to clarify, I'M NOT starting a league myself. I'm just providing information to people who would/could or might have an interest in doing this. Some families who live in my area travel great distances to bring their kids to soccer, just because they're Hispanic leagues, and I just want to get the info for them to start a new one in the area, if they want. I won't have anything to do with it.
it's lots off work just fielding a team i've been coaching soccer for 9 years and trust me its hard work.. I'm at soccer sometime 7 days a week, so if u want to start a leauge it double work...
BTW- to coach rep u need level 3 or else u can't coach, in hoese leauge u don't need any levels, but I would recomend that u get them.. each course cost about 140, and level 3 cost about 180, but this is a two day course

Yeah, screw that! That's why I'm gonna get my kid into golf
Tell me about it. Chile Jr starts swimming this summer. Its the only thing she is old enough for I have been trying to decide what to put her in once she is three but I can't decide. My niece loves soccer but I don't know if I would want to do that 4 times a week.
I guess if you want your child to seriously do well at a sport you MUST have dedication.
+ the kid him/herself has to have an inclination/love for the sport or activity that he/she is going to take a part on. I've found that mine wants to do one thing today, something else in six months, something else a year from now... ballet, swimming, karate, aerobics... Pffffttt, desde chiquitas las mujeres can't make up their minds!!!

nope i don't have any kind of info for u, but one thing i do know is that u need a lot of paper work to get something like this going, and u need to take i think courses if not u i know for sure the people u hire to do the coaching.
~X
Really?!?
I don't have any info either.
My brother in law coaches soccer...and he didn't have to take any courses.
I guess it might depend on the level of league you're trying to put on.
Anyone can coach house league. You need to be certified for Rep soccer

I'm doing some research (seriously) on starting up a soccer league for kids and youthseses. Any advice you guys can give me? People to contact? Where to get information, that kind of thing?
