Oh yeahhhh ... I was asked to do a Calendar...This person was going to sell it and make money from it BUT the girls aka models had to provide her OWN make up and wardrobe
And me , I had to work for FREE despite he was going to make money.
Let me say it again.....TLN.....that TELELATINO.....channel 35 for most of you...
Every year when local bands and artists want to participate in the Latinfest....they don't want to cough up the money to pay.....The same....."we're giving you free promo" line comes up.
It makes me laugh.
...oh....and btw.......most promoters do the same thing.....
I can't see the video here, but I think I know what you're getting @ We are regularly hit up to do some work for local mags etc... but the work actually goes to a private third party 'client'. I wasn't happy with that because what happened was, the client got free furniture, the mag got the pieces for free to do the photo shoot, and I got a small credit mention, which didn't help me that much I'm not comfortable with either the client getting free furniture, the magazine getting their pieces for their shoot for free, or ME getting free exposure. So what I used to do was set discounted price and ask them to write a cheque, for that amount, to the charity of their choice and send it to me when the work was done, and I would then send it to the charity in their name. That way the client had to pay for our services, so did the mag, and so did I (by not really getting payed) for the credits, AND a charity got some dough. Everybody won, and at least it felt fair

This is my feelin on the subject of doing "credit only" work. I've been having other "issues" with others hitting me up to do free work for them too lately (which I refuse to do).
Just replace "writers" with "photographers", and the argument sounds all too familiar.
