Chile: That above.gif is why the amazing writers of the Toronto Sun found it ironic when he gave this interview below.gif

Hard 'Candy' for Heath Ledger
By JIM SLOTEK - Toronto Sun

invisible.gif
Heath Ledger in a a scene form the Aussie drama Candy. Ledger plays a heroin addict in the film that depicts his gradual descent into a drug user's hell.

TORONTO - It turns out heroin and sex have one thing in common, at least in the world of movie censors -- penetration is a no-no.

"I did one scene they didn't end up using," says Heath Ledger of the junkie-romance Candy, which debuts tonight at the Toronto filmfest. "It was near the end of the movie when I inject again (after being clean). There was a shot that we had, a tight shot of my arm, and I slipped the needle in and pulled back until you saw the blood, and then they went off it onto my face.

"I actually injected. It had water colour and sugar in it to make it look watery brown. And then we found out that was the difference between a (Mature) rating and an R. The penetration. When it looked like it was going in and it didn't really go in, that was okay."

Based on a best-selling novel by Australian Luke Davies (who also scripted), Candy is the story of a junkie poet (Ledger) and his artist girlfriend Candy (Abbie Cornish) and their descent in acts called "Heaven," "Earth" and "Hell."

Ledger was at TIFF last year with another tragic romance you might have heard of called Brokeback Mountain. You'd normally follow something like that with a comedy, and Ledger did with the movie Casanova.

"That's why I had the energy to be dark again, because I'd been in bloody Venice drinking too much wine and eating."

invisible.gif

By way of research, he says "Abbie and I went to this narcotics users association in Australia, and we met a guy who'd been addicted to heroin for, like, 20 years. And he took us through the steps of how to shoot up. He took a prosthetic arm with veins and blood bags and showed us how to find the vein and the angle to slip the needle in.

"I've smoked pot before, and I know what it feels like to be high. But I've never been addicted to anything other than cigarettes, although that's quite a f---in' addiction. Also the subject of heroin ... there's so many television documentaries and shows and movies and books, you kind of feel you know how they do it, even if you've never been anywhere near it."

Candy is actually the first Australian movie Ledger has been in for eight years -- quite a long time to bury his Aussie accent. "And I'm constantly looking for material in Australia just for that reason. It's so liberating to perform without an accent. But all the good writers and filmmakers in Australia get swept up and go to Hollywood. So we're kind of left with the very fresh and up-and-coming filmmakers." (Candy director Neil Armfield is a veteran theatre director new to feature films).

Candy marked a hiatus of another sort as well. It was the last movie Ledger would do for 18 months -- a paternity leave he breaks next Tuesday when he starts filming Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan-inspired surrealist movie I'm Not There with Michelle Williams, his fiancee and mother of their 11-month-old daughter Matilda. In fact, he found out she was pregnant while filming Candy.

I'm Not There (for which Dylan has agreed to provide music), has been called a biopic. "But no one's playing Bob Dylan. Even the title, I'm Not There ... well, he's not there. There are sort of Dylan -inspired characters, but Cate Blanchett looks the most like Bob Dylan. In fact, she looks exactly like Bob Dylan. It's very surrealistic and incredibly ambitious. I'm more curious about this than anything else I've been a part of."

Come January, he starts playing the Joker, in Christopher Nolan's next Batman film The Dark Knight. "It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister."

As for the maternity/paternity leave "we've just been living in Brooklyn and really committing our time to Matilda. We've just been letting it kind of consume us. We wanted to distance ourselves, and we couldn't think of anything better to do than wake up to play with our child.

"That's the biggest gift this industry has given us, is the ability to do that."

During his all too short life, Heath Ledger battled addictions to alcohol and drugs, including cocaine, heroin and "a variety of pills," the new issue of Us Weekly is reporting.

Heath's demons were so powerful and harmful to his relationship with Michelle Williams that she tried to get him to enter rehab, says the mag.

In March 2006 just weeks after the couple walked the Oscars red carpet and when daughter Matilda was only five months old Williams drove Ledger to Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, California, the confidant tells Us Weekly.

Ledger refused to check in, instead swaying her with a pledge to clean up.

One of the issues that haunted Heath in his final days: two sources tell Us that Williams demanded Ledger be drug-tested before his visitations with Matilda.

Man, heroin is the bad stuff. Once you go there, there's no turning back!

Baptist Church Plans To Picket Ledger's Funeral

Caution: Some viewers may find the following content offensive.

A radical Kansas-based church plans to protest actor Heath Ledger's funeral over his Academy Award-nominated role in Brokeback Mountain.

The Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka claims Ledger died and is in Hell because he played a gay cowboy in the critically acclaimed Ang Lee film.

The 28-year-old Aussie actor was found deceased in bed in a Manhattan apartment Tuesday afternoon. No foul play is suspected and police suggested an accidental drug overdose could be to blame. Prescription sleeping pills were found by his body. However an autopsy conducted Wednesday came back inconclusive.

The church released a statement the same day as the star's death, quoting a Bible passage that states, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination."

The release went on to contend, "Heath Ledger is now in Hell and has begun serving his eternal sentence there."

It's not the first time the church, started in 1955, has voiced its opposition to the gay lifestyle. Members run several websites that espouse their views and so far they've held tens of thousands of demonstrations. The group reportedly also plans to picket the Academy Awards this year.

That's even MORE retarded than the masseuse AND the Olsen chick no.gif

Minute By Minute: Police Release Timeline Of Heath Ledger's Death
Wednesday January 23, 2008
By Tom Hays The Associated Press

Police provided an in-depth timeline Wednesday of Heath Ledger's final moments, revealing the chaos that filled his Manhattan apartment in the moments after the Australian-born actor died.

It included a frantic call to former "Full House" star Mary-Kate Olsen, a massage therapist desperately trying to wake him, and a maid who was in Ledger's bedroom in the moments before he died.

Police said Ledger probably died sometime between 1pm and 2:45pm on Tuesday of what authorities say may be an accidental drug overdose.

Authorities found six different types of prescription drugs in Ledger's apartment, including pills to treat insomnia and anxiety, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Three of the drugs were prescribed in Europe.

Ledger's housekeeper, Teresa Solomon, arrived at his apartment with her own key and let herself in. At 1pm, she went to his bedroom to change a light bulb, and saw Ledger sleeping and heard him snoring. She left the room without thinking anything was wrong.

At 2:45pm, a masseuse named Diana Wolozin showed up for her massage appointment with Ledger, who didn't answer when she knocked on his door.

She then tried to call him on his cellphone, but again got no response. She went into the bedroom, set up her massage table and again tried to wake Ledger.

Wolozin told police that Ledger was cold to the touch, but she just assumed he was unconscious. She proceeded to grab his cellphone and call Mary Kate Olsen, whose number is programmed into the phone. Wolozin knew that Olsen and Ledger were friends, and she asked Olsen for advice on what she should do next.

Olsen, who also lives in Manhattan but was in California at the time, responded by saying she would send over her private security guards to help deal with the situation. In the ensuing moments, Wolozin realized that Ledger might be dead, and called 911.

The emergency operator provided Wolozin directions on how to do CPR, but it was too late.

Paramedics arrived minutes later, at about the same time as Olsen's security guards.

Anyway I heard that there is a church group that is having some protest at his funeral because he was in Brokeback Mountain.  How very retarded.  Too bad they didn't all die instead of him.

@CRUZ (lol)...Yeah I hear the joker role is crazy intense.

@DOGO...I saw that clip of his parents.  They looked sad but they were not crying.  I guess everyone deals in a different way.  Some people sort of go into shock and then break down after the funeral.  I am sure they are torn apart.

Everyone deals with death in a different way. When my aunt passed away 4 years ago my uncle didn't shed a tear or looked depressed. BUT when the day of the funeral came, he cried like a baby as they lowered the casket to the ground. I guess that was the moment he realized that she was never coming back.

I've been reading that his role as the Joker for the new Batman movie really messed him up. He was losing sleep and felt the role was demonic.
I'm curious to watch the movie and see how his role as Joker is.

Reading about his death was pretty shocking for a Tuesday afternoon.

Heath Ledger found dead in New York

Ian Munro, New York
January 23, 2008 - 8:54PM

An autopsy will be carried out on the body of actor Heath Ledger overnight Australian-time, the New York City Police Department says.

A police spokesman this evening said the medical examiner's office would conduct the autopsy between 9am and 5pm (1am and 9am AEDT).

Police have confirmed that sleeping pills were discovered near the body of Ledger, 28, when he was found dead in a Manhattan apartment today.

New York Police Department deputy commissioner Paul Browne said the Oscar-nominated Australian actor's body was found naked and face-down on the floor of his bedroom by a housekeeper about 3.30pm Tuesday (7.30am Melbourne time).

''There were pills within the vicinity of the bed,'' Mr Browne said.

But he stressed that pills were not scattered around Ledger's body, as had been previously reported.

"There were some prescription medications that included sleeping pills," he said.

The 28-year-old actor, who had reportedly been ill with pneumonia, had an appointment for a massage at the apartment, which is believed to be his home in Soho in Manhattan.

The housekeeper went to tell Ledger the masseuse had arrived and found him naked and unconscious at the foot of his bed.

Ledger's former fiancee, Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams - the mother of his two-year-daughter Matilda - was reported to be ''devastated'' by his death and had boarded a flight to New York.

Representatives of the actor's family said police had advised them his death was accidental, the TMZ.com website reported.

The site said representatives had made contact to say Ledger's family was particularly distraught over media speculation that he may have taken his own life. He was not that kind of person, the family said.

Ledger's Californian attorney, John LaViolette, could not be contacted this morning.

A spokeswoman at his office said he was currently on a plane.

"I'm sorry, we can't talk about this now, we're too upset," she said, before ending the phone call.

Ledger's death comes during the making of his latest film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, directed by Terry Gilliam and in which he was to star alongside Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits.

Ledger was an Oscar nominee for his role in Brokeback Mountain and had numerous other screen credits.

He played a heroin addict in Candy, the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in Monster's Ball and had starring roles in A Knight's Tale and The Patriot.

His most recent role was in I'm Not There, in which he played one of the many incarnations of singer Bob Dylan - as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

He was to appear as the Joker this year in The Dark Knight, a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins.

Ledger was born in Perth, the son of Sally Ledger Bell and Kim Ledger, a race car driver and mining engineer.

He made his film debut in the 1997 Australian movie Blackrock, and in 1999 starred in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

In 2005, Ledger received an Oscar nomination for his acclaimed performance in Brokeback Mountain, in which he played a gay ranch hand who had a love affair with a rodeo rider.

Perth casting director Annie Murtagh-Monks discovered Ledger as a
15-year-old in a school production of Hamlet.

''He had a natural ability but it wasn't like he was driven to be a star at that age,'' she told 3AW.

Ledger was cast in the short-lived TV drama Sweat - where he played a young gay cyclist preparing for the Olympics - and his career blossomed from there.

His role as the Joker in The Dark Knight had been difficult, Murtagh-Monks noted.

''I'd heard that he'd had a lot of trouble sleeping from that,'' she said. ''I honestly don't know what's caused this.''

The actor's relationship with the press was turbulent. In 2004 he allegedly spat at a paparazzi photographer in Sydney, a claim that he strongly denied.

In January 2006, several photographers retaliated, squirting Ledger with water pistols as he walked the red carpet for the Sydney premiere of Brokeback Mountain.

Earlier this month Ledger was linked with West Australian model and actor Gemma Ward.
