This book starts with a poem quote by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919):

It has ever been since time began,
And ever will be, till time lose breath,
That love is a mood--no more--to man,
And love to a woman is life or death.

Dr. Laura wrote this book for women to realize how they screw themselves up in their relationships with men. While all of the things listed are different, the basic tenent here is for a woman to depend on herself and make herself strong. Then she can relate well to a man or get the loser out of her life. The whole book is on men-women relationships and how a woman can suffer in one or rise above it. As this poem states, men and women look at relationships differently. This one is aimed to women.

My 16-year-old daughter read this book and thought it was dumb. I was glad she did. I believe she is strong enough in herself to avoid these stupid things we do. And if the situation arises where she recognizes herself, hopefully she'll be able to handle it. Unfortunately for me, one of the ten fit me all too well. Her straight talk about the situations can put my teeth on edge - perhaps because it hits too close to home at times?

Every woman in a relationship can benefit. Will we all identify ourselves? If we haven't done any of these things, we can rejoice. We are in a good, healthy relationship.

The ten stupid things:

Stupid attachment

1. Stupid courtship
2. Stupid devotion
3. Stupid passion
4. Stupid cohabitation
5. Stupid expectations
6. Stupid conception
7. Stupid subjugation (her firmest chapter - don't allow your children to be held hostage)
8. Stupid helplessness
9. Stupid forgiving: I agree with this one wink

This is written in Dr. Laura's very forthright style. It is not deep; it is thought provoking.
