Because we're unionized, my friggin' workplace is trying to say that we have to follow union's rules and only get the holidays they specify in their collective agreement only 'cause they don't want to give us the day off. there's no justice in this world.
We're unionized too; but we got our calendar clearly marked as Monday January 18th as a HOLIDAY. Your union sucks - throw tomatoes at them
yeah, yeah... but you're with the government... your whole year is a holiday... better throw tomatoes at you...

I would think most are just happy to have an extra Holiday - a well needed break in mid winter. But, sure - we would ALSO like to pay less taxes. To have one is a good start - let's hope more is done as time goes on!
I agree is better than nothing. I would rather have to pay less taxes. I guess I'll take wha'ts given to me, we have no saying or choices :)

Victorious McGuinty's first order of business: a new February holiday (Elxn-Ont-Liberals) By Keith Leslie
THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA _ Newly re-elected Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty wasted no time in returning the favour to Ontario voters Thursday as he declared that a promised new statutory holiday in February would take effect next year.
McGuinty said the Liberal cabinet would approve regulations within the day to establish Family Day on the third Monday each February _ a badly needed break from the hectic pace of what the premier calls Ontario's ``just-in-time'' lifestyle.
``There's a lot of noise in life, but there is nothing more important than time with those people who are most important to us,'' he said after voters gave the Liberals an even stronger majority than they won in 2003.
``This is a small thing, but it's an important _ and I think a powerful _ recognition (that) our priorities are the priorities of families.''
Ontario will now have nine long weekends per year, along with Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Manitoba, too, has also added a February holiday _ Louis Riel Day.
Looking tired but happy, McGuinty told cheering supporters in Ottawa early Thursday that voters gave his government ``some pretty clear marching orders'' by making him the first Liberal premier to win back-to-back majority governments since Mitch Hepburn in 1937.
``One is, keep moving forward, keep improving the quality of our public health care system, keep improving publicly-funded education for all our children.''
McGuinty again took pains to portray himself as a champion of public education who prevailed convincingly over Conservative Leader John Tory and his contentious proposal to publicly fund private religious schools.
``You want to know where I'm going? Take a look at where I've been in the course of the past four years: smaller classes, higher test scores, higher graduation rates, thousands more teachers to improve the quality of learning that we offer two million Ontario students,'' he said.
``That's what I want to keep doing.''
McGuinty said he got a lot of feedback on the campaign trail that voters wanted him to stay positive, and that they did not like the negative attacks that the opposition parties launched against him.
``I came under a heavy, constant, negative barrage aimed exclusively at my head,'' McGuinty said, referring to a Conservative attack ad that featured a shattering-glass image of the premier's face.
``You sometimes wonder what kind of an impact this is going to have on voters, what kind of a cumulative effect and impact does it have on viewers. You're watching the hockey game and ``bang, bang, bang, you know, this guy McGuinty'' . . . so I just did what I thought was the right thing to do.''
McGuinty said he hasn't yet thought about changing his cabinet, which lost only one veteran when Culture Minister Caroline Di Cocco was defeated by Conservative Bob Bailey in Sarnia-Lambton.
He offered congratulations to Tory and **>NDP<** Leader Howard Hampton, but refused to discuss whether either embattled leader would find themselves in leadership races in the near future.
McGuinty also dismissed the idea of another referendum on changing the electoral system, saying voters clearly rejected the idea of mixed-member proportional representation in Wednesday's vote.
`` We've had that debate,'' was all he would say on the topic.
McGuinty also told reporters he was glad the campaign was over, but joked that he briefly forgot that on waking Thursday morning.
``I got up this morning and turned on the light and I broke into my stump speech,'' he said.
``I feel like I've just gotten off a merry-go-round.''
