You also have to consider other things like your home computer. If you shoot in RAW your files are oing to be around 10mb each after 6 months of storage you gonna need more HD space.
In my case at this point I'm holding 2 TB's in Photos.
but thats when u have to ask yourself do i want to be a photographer.......meaning she is not going pro but wants good looking pics.

If you gonna start I would go with Nikon, cheaper, easier ...
Don't be fooled with Megapixles...6PM is good enough. Most of the Professional Photog Cameras use 10 Mp tops ! What make agood images are Image Quality provided for High Quality Optics (Lenses)
This is my Next Baby only 10 Mp...after that Im soo going to Morocco

It's expensive ...you can get a brand new for that price (Body Only) Also all depends for what you want the camera for ...that cam is good for normal life Pics.
The Lens is the crappiest one you can find, a Decent lense (L) goes from 700 USD up to 2.7K USD
Also if you buy used ask for the warranty...how old it is and VERY IMPORTANT how many "clicks" the camera has....because it can be 100K clicks with means the shutter will die anytime and you will be stuck with a broken Camera.
