With you on that one LG....I beleive that telling the kids the true and how things are is the best way.

When I was taking care of the girls back in Mx, I had some funny situations too and I always gave them a true answer with words that they could understand and the reason why and why not you can or can not do this or that.
That was around 1997 and believe me I was in chock, then laughing by some questions coming from a 7 y/o and the action of a 10 y/o.....the 3y/o one was just my baby

A sex related question, that is Are you prepared? My kid is almost 10, and yesterday he asked: "What does masturbating mean?" Caught me totally off guard.. I don't even think he knew it was sex related, so I said: "well... it has to do with sex, and you might be too young to know.. are you sure you want to know?" he said yes So I told him -without getting into details or being graphic- the basics He got totally embarrased and I changed topic and brushed it off What would you have said/will say?
I believe the best policy is to be straight forward and honest with kids - tell them the facts. Forget talking about the "birds and the bees" - straight sex talk is better that prettending for instance that babies are delivered by a bird! Of course, as a parent you have to try and figure out when the right time may be. Seems like when he is 10 and ASKING about a sex related topic may be a good time to start. IF caught of guard, I would probably have reacted somewhat similarly or postponed answering that question by telling him something like "I will get back to you later today/tomorrow - let me think and figure out how to respond to you".
