La Selección ecuatoriana terminó trotando ante El Salvador. El equipo centroamericano contaba los minutos para el fin del partido, agazapado en su área, defendiendo con nueve jugadores, tras las tontas expulsiones de Víctor Dubón y Eduardo Campos.

Si cuando tenía 11 hombres en cancha, El Salvador era inofensivo e inexpresivo, cuando perdió a sus dos volantes terminó de entregarse. Ayer en el estadio Atahualpa, hubo un solo equipo en cancha: Ecuador, que fue ambicioso desde el inicio y que mostró contundencia, buen juego y sobre todo algo que le fue esquivo en la última Copa América: definición.

Los roles siempre estuvieron claros desde el inicio: Ecuador salió a atacar y El Salvador a esperar en su arco, defendiendo con dos líneas de cuatro. En los cinco primeros minutos, el dominio tricolor fue tal que cobró tres tiros de esquina y dos balones salieron desviados del arco del joven   guardameta Luis Salinas, quien posteriormente fue sustituido.

Por ello, a ninguno de los 7 000 aficionados presentes en el Atahualpa les sorprendió la anotación de Christian Lara a los 14 minutos. Tal vez llamó la atención la vistosidad del remate de 35 metros y la impotencia de Salinas por alcanzar el balón.

El escaso nivel del rival fue una invitación para que los talentosos ecuatorianos quisieran armar un festín en Quito. Édison Méndez se juntó   con Lara y con el imparable Christian Benítez para hacer daño. Un poco menos expresivo, Felipe Caicedo se sumaba a los intentos ofensivos, pero ayer la altura hizo mella en el espigado delantero del Basel suizo.

Ecuador atacó   por la derecha, por el centro, por la izquierda... El asedio era permanente hasta que el Chucho Benítez empezó a armar su propio show: a los 29 minutos solo empujó el balón para el 2-0.

Lejos de quitar el pie del acelerador, Ecuador siguió manejando velocidades de Fórmula Uno, con un piloto de ataque como Benítez, totalmente indescifrable para los rivales.

El Salvador aprovechó un solo descuido de la zaga ecuatoriana para anotar a los 36 minutos a través de Eliseo Quintanilla. Pero la expulsión de Dubón al final del primer tiempo y de Campos en el segundo complicaron el panorama.

Caicedo, que estuvo   errante por la zona ofensiva, se encontró con un gol ampliamente celebrado por él a los 44 minutos. Pero la noche era de Benítez y, en el segundo tiempo, el delantero del Santos marcó la ruta de la goleada en dos jugadas: a los 48 cuando desairó a los rivales y marcó el 4-1 y a los 53 cuando provocó el penal convertido por Patricio Urrutia.

Con el 5-1 a favor, los salvadoreños se concentraron en castigar a su verdugo y las faltas sobre Benítez eran continuas. Paúl Ambrosi también sintió castigo en sus piernas, fruto de la impotencia de los centroamericanos. Por ello, el técnico Luis Suárez decidió cambiar a los talentosos Lara, Méndez y Benítez. Las manos de los aficionados se quedaron rojas de tanto aplausos a los cracks.

Otro de los más aplaudidos fue Iván Hurtado. Bam Bam cumplió 143 partidos como internacional. Era un día especial para él. Suárez lo entendió así y por ello lo volvió a designar capitán. Le devolvió la cinta que él mismo le había quitado.
