United for Peru Announces Fundraising Concert to further aid
Earthquake Relief Efforts
Released: Wednesday, August 22, 2007
United for Peru will be hosting a Concert Fundraiser on Sunday, August 26th, 2007 from 10am to 4pm at Mel Lastmans Square (5100 Yonge Street, Toronto).
Last Wednesday, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale rocked towns approximately 200 kilometres south of the Peruvian capital.
Thus far, Peruvian Government Official death toll reports stands at over 500, and 37,500 homes have been severely damaged or destroyed leaving thousands homeless.  One of the affected areas, Huancavelica, which stands 3300 metres above sea level, is one of the poorest areas in Peru.  Conditions there are still unknown and it is predicted overall consequences of this massive natural disaster will exacerbate in the next coming days.
United for Peru is a non-profit organization formed by non-profit Peruvian-Canadian institutions in Toronto. The Peruvian Communitys deepest concern in this disaster prompted the unification of efforts of all Peruvian Citizens and institutions living and operating in Toronto.  All aid received will be sent to organizations and/or parish who have acted most responsibly in dealing with this disaster.
